Kelly's Story

I apologize for my disappearance over the last few months. March threw a major curveball and I am still reeling from it. Edward landed in the hospital on March 9th with pneumonia. After a bronchoscopy he had an aveolar hemmorhage in his lungs and ended up on a ventilator for 18 days...twice excabated and reintubated due to failure to breath on his own...and another hemmorhage! Finally had a tracheotomy to get the ball rolling. After a perforated ulcer caused by industrial strength doses of steroids given for his lungs and another bout of pneumonia...he finally came home 3 months later. Not all is better yet and the road to recovery is long. As for myself? I take it one day at a time. I also keep my sense of humor which keeps me sane!! My oldest son, Eric, joined the Airforce. He graduated basic on July 4th. His dad attended the festivities and was able to spend a few days with him in Texas. Eric is at a different base in Texas for is specialized training. He will specialize in Nuclear Weapons systems! So...he is in the process of getting his top secret clearance...and won't be able to tell me much about what he is learning from that point. He is finding the adjustment to military life difficult but that is expected. He is great and I am so proud of him! Cory graduated AIT as Distinguished Honor Graduate! He is awesome!! Unfortunately his 2 year non-deployable status was pulled ( go figure, eh?) and will be heading for Iraq in August. Scared? Yes. Worried? Yes. His dad and I h...Expand for more
ave fears and we talk about them. We did agree that we keep our emotional blathering to a minimum in front of Cory. He has enough to deal with without the added hysterical parents. He is taking it all in stride and will be going with a solid team. Also two of his best friends will be there with him. He will be away for 12 months...so they say anyway. Ian has finally graduated high school...YAAAAAY!!!!! He also just turned 18. He is enrolling in college for Fall semester. He finally purchased his first car as well. He is doing wonderful but is very upset about Cory going to Iraq. He and Cory are very close and Ian doesn't hide his emotions. I am currently in the process of joining the Washington State National Guard. The cut off age is higher now...plus my time in service gets subtracted...which, according to the Army, I am 38 years old. I love that!!!!! Anyway, retested and am getting ready for my physical. My only set back is that I cant go till Cory comes back. If I had to go to Iraq that would really crush Ian...and I can't do that. Ian is okay with me joining but wants me to wait. He said he couldn't handle having everybody gone. I understand that. I will be here for him. Well, that is all for now. Life is ever evolving and shifting without the benefit of a clutch sometimes. I remain positive, mostly, and continue moving forward...well, as forward as one can go considering the setbacks! So, I move forward with an incredible head wind!!! Life is still good.
