Ken's Story
Life
Joined the Army after graduating in '63. Spent a 3-year tour at the Pentagon. Was fortunate to get into computer programming. Stayed in the D.C. area after getting out. Worked in private industry for 5 years and for the Federal Government for 35 years. Most of my career I've worked on Command and Control and Military Messaging Systems. Worked at the White House for most of the 70s, automating the Situation Room. Unfortunately, those were the Watergate years which took some of the luster off the experience. Spent a year in Southeast Asia in '68-69 but was able travel to Hong Kong, Taipei, Thailand & Australia. I'd come thru Alaska & Japan on the way there. Decided to come thru Europe on the way back so I flew around the world, with stops in Greece, Italy, France, England & the Netherlands.
Married a Pennsylvania girl in 1972. Our daughter graduated from Virginia Tech (go Hokies) and got her masters from George Mason. She now works for the National Geospatial Agency. Our son graduated from Louisiana State (Geaux Tigers). He's a High School Band Director in Austin. We had wonderful 46 years together, including a trip through Europe & a Caribbean cruise. Unfortunately, she passed away unexpectedly in 2018 - I'm still adjusting to life without her.
Retired from the Government in September 2006. Did private consulting 3 days/week until 2010. Haven't had time t...Expand for more
o enjoy my semi-retirement yet. Had shoulder surgery in October. Broke a bone in my foot jogging in January. Then had an unexplained Pulmonary Embolism in March. Finally getting back into shape. In 2007 started playing in both day & night softball leagues (6 games/week). Had first knee surgery in 2010, then a Rotator Cuff & Labrum surgery in 2012. Unfortunately, I blew it out again the next year & was told the only thing they could do is a Reverse Shoulder Replacement (would mean I couldn't throw overhand). Decided against surgery & played with it as it was. Dropped out of the night league.
We were blessed with a granddaughter in 2011. We were fortunate to be able to watch her weekdays for her first 5 years.
Had a body makeover in 2015: Double Lumbar Fusion & both knees replaced, then another DVT/PE, so that was the first year I hadn't played some form of ball in 6-7 decades. Picked up again in 2016 but only in the day league. Did OK until I dove for a ball this year (2023) & was forced to have that dreaded Reverse Shoulder Replacement - after 6 months of PT I'm gradually getting there & am aiming for an April '24 softball comeback. Will have to alter my golf swing & throwing motion but plan to get back to both in 2024.
Both of my parents have passed away so there's not much left to bring me back to Carlsbad but I will always look back fondly on my time there.
