Ken's Story
After Annapolis High:
I attended the University of Maryland. In 1969 I was in a bad car accident and had to withdraw from UM. Two years later received a AA degree in Engineering from Anne Arundel Comm. Coll.
1971-72
I attended Northern Arizona Univ. and graduated with a BS in Geology. Returned to Annapolis and worked for Griener Engineering in Baltimore.
1974
Quit my job and left Maryland and traveled cross country camping and fishing zigzagging between US and Canada. Met a lot of interesting people that summer. I was on my way to California to be near my girl friend but stopped off in Alaska to see what it was like. I did not make it to California but remained in Fairbanks, Alaska. Spent the winter in a cabin living off of moose meat grouse and ptarmigan along with store bought veggies. We (three of us) were 4o miles from town and a mile north of a dead end dirt road. keep warm, ran a trap line (caught nothing), but had marvelous time and learned a lot about life. Record-breaking cold temperatures that year but the fire kept us warm,
1975
Panned for gold for a few months but decided it was time to return to society. Got a job. Flew to California and married my girl friend.
1979 - 1980,s
Graduate school at the University of Alaska with MS in Geology. Landed a job at the Geophysical Institute, UAF as a research associate. Worked on analyzing many aspects of geology using satellite data.
1990 to Present
Became college professor working with the Alaska Volcano Observatory. I am still there but plan to retire soon. Presently writing a reference book on monitoring volcanic eruptions using satellite data.
Presently live in Fairbanks Alaska. Interestingly, there are several classmates from Annapolis High class of 1967 that live here or that I have run into in Fairbanks. They include Bob Grass, Reese Burket, and Scott Penwell.
