Ken's Story

After Starpoint, went to Roberts Wesleyan College in Rochester, NY. Won my first CC race as a Frosh, went on to win 3 state championships, managed 4 years without graduation. Knees "blew out" a few years later, but I did manage a 10K under 40 minutes in 1982. Not currently running, but would love to coach a team. After my "illustrious career" at RWC, I got married, got drafted, went to 'Nam on a floating bird farm (Aircraft Carrier, the USS Midway, CVA 41) for 4 years. Got out, finished up at RWC, went to RIT and got MBA. After bouncing around in various jobs in machine shops, and getting laid off for a total of 12 months, I ended up working for the DOD in Kalamazoo, Michigan. (Yes, there really is a Kalamazoo!). Three years later, I transferred from Kalamazoo to Dallas. Raised 7 kids, all grown and out of trouble, with 13 grandkids and still going - at least one on the way "in the oven", as we say in Texas.. Saw lots of interesting things with DOD. Went to Germany for 3 years working for DOD, traveled all over Europe. Witnessed distruction of SS-24 Soviet missile silos and Bear & Blackjack heavy bombers in the Ukraine. Came back to Dallas, I am currently enjoying retirement immensely!. Want to re-establish old bridges. But I'm not pushy. I feel that I am a totally different person than the shy, geeky guy you may remember. Does anyone remember the "We want Norbert!" chant at the basketball games in 1965? It was me along with Sam Kroll and John Gates that got that whole thing going. Remember the last game of the season? We had everyone in the gym, including the vis...Expand for more
iting spectators chanting it (THEY didn't even have a clue who Norbert was, but they joined in anyway), and they had to stop the game because no one could hear over the chanting. Old Mr. Baum rolled his eyes several times, but Norbert got in on a late-season squeaker. However, he managed to keep up his "perfect record" 0-0-0. No scores, no assists, no nothing. But he surely did bring some drop-dead gorgeous young ladies around to the school. Anyone know what Norbert is doing now? I would bet he is a high-powered corporate officer making tons of money somewhere. He was a really nice person, and what happened in that last game was not something we planned. Norbert "brought down the house" with his spectacular jam on the basket. Or, should I say, the basket jammed him? Later, I did 4 years in the Navy (at the President's "special invitation"). God Bless the Draft Board (may they rot in hell!) . Bossing work groups in the main Galley, spud locker and hard stores aboard a Navy Aircraft Carrier cured me of shyness! I am currently a dedicated wordsmith and love writing. I have worked on a book, which I have started over 7 times. Maybe now with retirement, I can get 'er done. Anyone know where Sam Kroll or John Gates are? For anyone else, I would love to share some old "war stories" with anyone of a kindly mind. Did you know that Tim McVeigh, the notorious Oklahoma City Bomber attended our dear ol' Alma Mater? I can't remember a class named "Bombing 101" offered while I was there! But if you want to swap stories with me, come on in! I would love to hear from you.
