Ken's Story

After high school I joined the Navy to see the world. I spent the next year and a half training in Great Lakes, Memphis and San Diego. Then it was off to a small island in the Pacific where the people shared about 1 ½ square miles of sand with a few hundred thousand nesting albatrosses. Midway island, a real paradise unless you are 19 years old. What I would do now to go back to that place. After Midway I finished my tour in San Diego and left the Navy (didn¿t see too much of the world). I moved back to the Oak Lawn area, got a job at Westinghouse and played more softball then I really cared to. The times of being 21, 22 and 23 consisted of work, softball and hanging out at my favorite watering hole (John¿s Garage in Ford City). I decided to go to school with the GI bill so I headed to Indianapolis to move in with family and go to school. The first year was okay but I soon realized I needed to get out on my own again. To do this I needed to get a job. Luck was on my side as I went to work for a company called Hewlett-Packard. That was a great company to work for. I continued school at nights. I met a girl at school and was married. We bought a house, I stopped going to school, and we enjoyed life. We both weren¿t ready for marriage so after 6 years together we called it quits. We are still good friends and I have nothing bad to say about it. I was tired of the corporate life with HP and went to work for a small retailer. Two months after I started the retailer was bought out by Wal-Mart. Yikes, back to the corporate world. I ended up moving down to the home office of Wal-Mart in Bentonville Arkansas. When I first was offered a position, I kept getting flash-backs of the movie Deliverance, barefoot hillbillies and people with a lot of teeth missing. I was wrong. This part of the country is very hilly and forested. Wal-Mart is actually a good company to work for. There was unlimited opportunity for advancement. I spent 6 years working here. My parents were living in Oak Lawn. My father was taking care of my Mother who had Alzheimer¿s. I moved back to help him out, got a job with Walgreens and lived in Villa Park. My mother was at a stage where she would need to be placed in a nursing home. This along with the fac...Expand for more
t I had missed Arkansas and all the friendly people, warmer weather and much much less traffic. I called my old boss at Wal-Mart and was instantly hired back. I moved my father and mother down here. We put Mom into a nursing home and my father moved in with me (within 6 months, my chocolate lab had gained 15lbs from my father always feeding him). It was strange living with my father at first but we each got into our own routine. I worked, he spent breakfast, lunch and dinner at the nursing home with my Mom and we both golfed on the weekends. I have always been a shy quiet person so I took to internet dating. It gave me a chance to get to know someone before we first met. I dated on and off for a couple of years. During this time I had a project working Brazil. The women of Brazil were so full of life and always happy. I decided I would look on the internet for someone from South America. I found a lovely girl that was similar to my situation, about my age, previously married, no children who lived in Colombia. We exchanged email and talked on the phone for about 6 months. We then decided to meet. She couldn¿t come here because she didn¿t have a visa, she also didn¿t want me to come to Colombia as she thought it wasn¿t safe. So we met in Costa Rica. We spent 8 days on the Pacific in a condo on the ocean. We found out we had a lot in common and enjoyed that time. When we now look back, we call that time our honeymoon. She teaches in Colombia so in the month that followed our trip, she went to the embassy and got a visa to visit the US. During her spring break she came up. I showed her Arkansas, Chicago, Indianapolis and a bit of Kansas City (her favorite musician was Billy Joel and he and Elton John had a concert in KC so I thought I would surprise her) We had fun and she had to head home. Later in the year, we decided to give marriage a try. It has been 6 great years. Now we do some travelling, fishing, boating, camping. We both look towards the day when we can retire, get some small place in Central or South America near the coast and enjoy the sunny days. I joined this web-site to see if anyone I knew was visiting. Maybe drop an email now and then and catch up. Drop me a line if you want, kogillATsbcglobalDOTnet
