Ken's Story

Life After graduating from High School I attended Oneonta State for 2 years, was out for 2 years and went back again to Oneonta in 1970 and graduated in 1974, this time with Departmental Honors in Speech & Theatre. In 1976 I went back on active duty under what became the Active Guard/Reserve Program and served in various positions until I retired 30 June 1996 at the rank of Sergeant Major. My military career resulted in my being stationed in Germany, where I came to love living; the result is that, excepting the 15 months I was stationed in Hawaii, I've been living near Heidelberg, Germany for the last 30 years. After 8 years the contract I was working under was cancelled with little notice but I was fortunate enough to find another job. Now after 7 1/2 years in that one we're once again getting done over as contractors as 'do it cheap' was the only perameter so we're all losing 1/3-1/2 of our pay this time around. The job at the end was taking too much of a physical and psychological toll on me so I retired completely at the end of August 2014. I pursued my theater major in my free time and have gotten to play everything from killers ('Wait Until Dark') to kings ('The King and I' & 'The Lion in Winter'). I was fortunate enough to be nominated in 2 consecutive US Army, Europe, Tournament of Plays; once for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy for my portrayal of the psychotic drill-sergeant in 'Biloxi Blues' (2000) and once for Best Actor in a Comedy for 'Deathtrap' (2001). Then after a gap of 10 years I returned ...Expand for more
to community theater in March 2011 in the role of Joe Keller in Arthur Miller's 'All My Sons' and was again nominated for Best Actor, this time in a Drama; in the 2011 USAREUR Tournament of Plays so I guess I can still rise to the occasion. I'm also able to keep up with my hobby of collecting German Antique Militaria and have had some of my items pictured in reference books on the subject. But there's still a lot to experience, so here I am! Military I enlisted 14 November 1968 at the US Army Reserve Center in Poughkeepsie, New York. I went on active duty as a Reservist in the fledgling Army Reserve Recruiting Program on 15 November 1976. I was the Army Reserve Recruiter for Dutchess County from then until April of 1981 and during that time was the 1st Reserve Recruiter in the Northeast Region Recruiting Brigade to earn the Recruiter's Ring for Recruiting Excellence. From April '81 until April of '85 I served in various positions at the Recruiting Battalion until my promotion to Master Sergeant, when I was assigned to Fort Dix, New Jersey as an In-Service Recruiter. After 3 years at Dix I was assigned to Germany in the same job and was USAREUR Transition NCO of the Year for FY 89, FY 90, and FY 91. I was assigned to Schofield Barracks, Hawaii from October '92 to April '94 and while there was promoted to Sergeant Major and was the Command Transition Sergeant Major for 25th Infantry Division & US Army - Hawaii. From 1994 until my retirement in July of 1996 I was the Command Transition Sergeant Major for V Corps.
