Ken's Story

After graduating from Massachusetts Maritime Academy, I sailed in the US Merchant Marine for 8 years. When I came ashore I fell into the hydroelectric power industry and worked in Massachusetts for around 25 years including having my own business with my sons called"Smith Alternative Energy Services". When the economy tanked in 2012, I had to close the business as a full time venture and I took a job with the New York Power Authority. I now still own my home in North Brookfield (which I return to most weekends)and I have an apartment in White Plains, NY where I am providing engineering support for the rebuilding of the Niagara Falls Hydroelectric Plant. I have been married to the same woman for 33 years and have two sons. My wife's name is Susan. She is a Spencerite and lived on School St. Her maiden name is Paradis. My sons each have a son so I have 2 grandkids. I still play out occasionally with my guitar. ouldn't stay up that late anymore- I did stand in for my brother-in-law and played bass for our 40th reunion. It was totally coincidental. My sons followed me in the music direction also. Some of you may have heard the band "All Folked Up".They were very popular in the area but they haven't played since the grandchildren were born. My next gig will be the Church Bazaar at Mary Queen of the Rosary either June 5th or 6th(2015). Being basically a country boy, I never thought I would have an apartment in a suburb of NYC. I traded in the night sounds of peepers and crickets for horns and sirens. It was a culture shock at first but now I tune the city noise out. One benefit of living in the city is that I when I arrive in White Plains I park my car and walk to work. Movie theaters, restaurants, and grocery stores are all within walking distance from my apartment. I have a BS degree in Marine Engineering and an Associates degree in Electrical Engineering. I am a Registered Professional Mechanical Engineer.
