Ken's Story
Life
Moved to Seaside in 1956 from Barstow, Ca. Started school at Ord Terrace K-6 in 1960, then went to the Portola Jr. High which was then changed to Martin Luther King Junior High. On to Seaside High School.
After graduation in 1973 I attended Monterey Peninsula College and finally received my AA degree and transfered to Fresno State in 1976. I received my Bachelors degree in 1982. I went to work at Kings River Community College in Reedley, Ca as a Residence Hall Supervisor. I then transfered to work at Fresno City College in 1988. I went back to school to get my Masters Degree in Education Administration. I married in 1984 to a wonderful girl I met at Fresno State. Ann is from Porterville, Ca. We have two children, girl 23 and boy 19. I spent 11 years as the College Relations Coordinator at Fresno City College. I was responsible for the recruitment of all new first time students. I decided to make a change in jobs. I am now a counselor for the EOPS program here at Fresno City College. It is hard to believe that I completed my 29th year with the same employer. My Mom & Dad now live in Paso Robles. My sister Sue (Class of 1974)also lives in Paso Robles and my brother Doug (Class of 1978, lives in Marina). Life has been very good for the Chavez family here in Fresno. Drop me a line after you read this. Workplace
While attending Fresno State I worked as a Resident Advisor (RA) in the residence halls for a year and then a Senior Resident Advisor for another year. My first goal in college was to become a High School teacher and coach but that changed after working with college students. After graduation I worked at Reedley College as a Residence Hall Supervisor for 7 years. I then transfered to Fresno City College as a Educational Advisor (2 years), I then was promoted to College Relations Coordinator (10 years). I am now a Counselor in the Fresno City College EOPS office. (e-mail) ken.chavez at fresnocitycollege dot edu I will never forget those early jobs in high school. Pumping gas at Sasaki Bros. Texaco in Seaside was a great experience!!
Military
I never served in the military but spent many hours as a kid at Fort Ord. I remember roaming through all the fields with friends hunting for lizards. As I got older we spent time in the barracks shining shoes for the GI's. My dad worked Civil Service at Fort Ord for over 30 years. Living that close to a military base had its advantages and disadvantages. It always seemed once you made a new friend then they were moving away because their father was being transfered.
