Susan's Story

Life After graduating from HMA, I spent a year at Pacific Union College majoring in music before switching to nursing. Since 1969, except for brief breaks for four maternity leaves, I have been continuously- and over-employed as a nurse. 26 years ago, I found my nursing niche in labor and delivery and have worked in that department ever since. I am also doing some medical-legal consulting for a malpractice attorney, and review obstetric charts for cases they are going to litigate. I feel a little guilty for going over to the "dark side," which is what we nurses tend to think about lawyers...but in the cases I have reviewed, the care given has, in one way or another been SO bad that I really can't feel anything but good about helping the victims get some kind of justice for their loss. My 4 children range in age from 26-32. The oldest and youngest, both girls have provided all the grandchildren--6 in all. My oldest daughter's children (8, 6, 4) are biological; the youngest daughter's children (11, 9,8) are adopted. Both sets are equally active and noisy, and get clobbered equally if they bug...Expand for more
Grandma. My oldest son is a physics/computer science major at Berkeley; my younger son just graduated from the UofOK in biology and will enter the master's program in wildlife conservation in Tucson this winter. My mother died in 2001 but my dad is still alive, and 90 years old. He lives with my oldest daughter because he needs more care than I can give and still work, which is not something that I have a choice about. So she takes care of him, and I pay her bills in exchange for her effort. This is good for everybody since it lets him live at home, my daughter to both earn money and stay home to care for her own kids (in addition to working on her 3rd book--the first, Malchus: Touched by Jesus, was released by the Review in 2/05; the 2nd companion volume to Malchus, Peter: Fisher of Men, will come out this summer as a self-published work; and the 3rd will be The Message of the Cross and will feature the Mann Gulch fire), and allows me to continue laying golden eggs...not an easy feat for a post-menopausal woman without ovaries!! I envy all of you who are retired. Me? I'm just plain tired.
