Kenneth's Story

Oh where does one begin to describe their life for the past 30 years? As some of you may remember me, I was one of those average; ok slightly below average, students that attended summer school and as a result, in my senior year I only needed to take a Government class. I did and in January 1978 I graduated. Do you remember your graduation night? Seeing others getting the honors and then you begin wondering why you could not have done more; studied better, and you realize, it is too late now. While at Central I was also attending IVC since fall of 1976 taking law enforcement classes. A rule required that if you are in High School and attending college at the same time, you either have to carry 16 units or 4 classes at the same time. Since I only was taking a single class at Central I needed to take 4 classes at IVC. Not being able to get four law enforcement classes, I decided to take a computer class; Introduction to Data Processing. I fell in love with computers and computer programming and, as it turns out, I took to data processing like a duck to water. The computer classes enabled me to get a job at the NAF El Centro as a Computer Operator working for a company called Kentron International. I had dated only a couple of the girls at high school and for most of high school I dated Patty Barber. I would meet my wife at IVC; Mary Ann Thatcher of Brawley. For years I thought I courted her only to learn later in life, as she explains it to friends, that it was she that architected the capture of me. Well, on May 10th 1980, I married Mary Ann and by this time the computer classes landed me a job at the NAF El Centro as a Computer Operator and on October 27 our first daughter; Kristina Ann, was born. It was a couple of years later that Kentron transferred me to Yuma Proving Grounds where I was promoted to Supervisor. While in Yuma our second daughter; Ashley Marie, was born April 23, 1983. My computer skills increased and the Univac System Analyst took a liking to...Expand for more
me and became my mentor. You know why we need these mentors? The stuff we learned in school is nothing like the way in works in the 'real world.' Get this, his nickname name was 'Sparky' and he provided a reference that led to a job working for Sperry Univac. It was Systems Analyst training program in McLean, Virginia. For those geographically challenged, that would be about 16 miles west of Washington, D.C. It was in Virginia that we had our third, and last, daughter; Megan Michelle, who was born on July 23, 1987. While working for Sperry Univac, I worked on Department of Defense projects. One of these projects involved the interconnection of large mainframe computers for collaborative application processing. This was the beginning of ¿networking¿ of computers. This research project had me assigned to, what was then called, the Defense Communications Agency, and is now known as Defense Information Systems Agency. It was here at DCA that I was part of a research project a research project dealing with networking at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and the network was ARPAnet; I was at the beginnings of the Internet and no, I never saw Al Gore in any planning or review meeting. This research project would lead to the creation of the Internet. In about 1989 I left the Sperry went to work for a consulting company called Network Strategies, Inc. and is where I was a co-author of a seminar titled Network Architectures and Protocols and The Defense Data Network: Architecture and Protocols. I travelled around the United States and the world conducting this 5-day training seminar. I never thought I would get out of the dessert south west let alone the United States. I traveled throughout Europe, Asia, and the south pacific. [more to come when I get time] Say, I am not a "gold' memeber as this was not necessary years past. So, to reach me, just email me at kennapier812 at gmail dot com as I Classamtes does not me see your "entries" in my guest book.
