Kenneth's Story
Hello everyone!
26 (+) years since our graduation - is time speeding up or what??! I'm married to a wonderfull gal named Leilani. We have two beautifull daughters named Ciara (10) and Kelsey (8).
Our favorite summer family vacations in the US: Taking the jet skis to Lake Martinez, AZ, or Laughlin, NV - both on the Colorado River and hanging with friends. During the winter months, we spend our free weekends riding in the Anza Borrego Desert. Ocotillo Wells and Glamis simply cannot be beat for 40,000 plus acres of off-road fun. It's why we have really grown to love SoCal - so many things to do.
I've been Navy over 23 years now and still love what I do. I think it's the diversity of our assignments and friendships made all over the world that keeps us going through the tough times of sea duty and cruises. We have lived as far away as Japan (twice) yet still call Escondido, in San Diego CA our "home" over the years.
We just returned from our second tour in Japan - this last time I was with VFA-102, "The Diamondbacks". I was the Squadron Maintenance Officer (MO) while there. What an AWESOME team!!! VFA-102 was just awarded the Battle "E" (for the best fighter squadron in the Pacific Fleet) and supervising maintenance on 13 FA-18/F Super Hornets as the "MO" was a dream assignment of mine. VFA-102 is one of seven squadrons assigned to Carrier Air Wing FIVE (CVW-5) which cruises aboard the USS Kitty Hawk. If anything happens in North Korea - we'll be there.
Living in Japan again reunited us with several Japanese families we made friends with and brought a whole new respect and admiration for the country and the awesome people there. Leilani was able to teach english to many of the same classes she had over 10 years ago. There is NO...Expand for more
OTHER place on earth where you can leave your home, your car, or your valuables unlocked when you leave. That summarizes the nature and attitudes of the Japanese. While in Japan, we took the time to see the hi-lites of the nation like Yokohama, Yokosuka, Enoshima, Beppu, Nagasake, Hiroshima, Mt Fuji, Gotemba - even Iwo Jima (X4) etc. Thanks to six years in Japan, we are hooked on Soba Noodles, Chashu-ramen, rice, and Japanese BBQ....with no where in San Diego to satisfy our appetites. "California sushi rolls" are about as close as we can get to Japanese cuisine in San Diego.....and that's about as close as Taco Bell is to real Mexican cuisine.
During the last three years, my family enjoyed trips to Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Tumon Bay Guam (X4) and Sydney Australia. The Pacific Rim is an outstanding area to visit and offers some of the best R&R a family can enjoy. There is nothing better than spending a day at the beach together snorkeling, enjoying the ocean breeze and slowing down for a spell.
I am currently stationed at NAS North Island, San Diego, at Commander Naval Air Forces (CNAF) Pacific Fleet. Driving a desk on my "staff tour" isn't nearly as interesting as being an operator in the Fleet, but someone's got to do it! I'll pick up Lieutenant Commander this September. At $4.17 a gallon with a 40 mile one-way commute to work - the extra $$$ will be nice. :)
My family still enjoys yearly trips to visit the Pacific Northwest and we just spent two incredible weeks in July camping at a river in central Oregon with family. Planning a trip to WA late this year - hope to run into you in our travels.
Until then, may you enjoy good health, happiness in your lives and success in your aspirations. Take care and God bless.
