Kenneth's Story
I attended Port Richmond High School twice. I was there as a freshman, and after a year in New Mexico, I came back to finish my junior year and graduate in 1963, I graduated from Staten Island Community College in June 1966, and attended Brooklyn College for three semesters. I worked summers as a New York City Lifeguard for five years, two years at Lyons Pool in Tompkinsville and three years at Midland Beach, before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force in September 1968.I served as an Inventory Management Specialist for about 5 years, I then retrained into the Broadcast Public Affairs career field. My first overseas assignment was to Thailand from 1971 to 1972. After I retrained, I served at Sondrestraom Air Base, Greenland, and learned a definition of cold.
The Air Force let me thaw out in Sacramento California for a year before sending me to Crete, Greece. That was the best assignment of my career, especially since I learned how to speak Greek. Can you hear me now Mrs. Agoratus.
After Greece, it was four years with AFN-SHAPE at Belgium, just over a year in Biloxi, MS and my final overseas tour was Incirlik Air ...Expand for more
Base Turkey. I returned to Andrews AFB, MD, bought a home and my family and I settled in Upper Marlboro, MD. My son and step children are all on their own. My son lives nearby with his family.
I went back college at Bowie State University in 2001, graduating Sum ma Cum Laude in May 2004 with a Bachelor of Science Communications Media/Broadcasting. I was blessed that my mother Lena B. Washington was able to see me graduate, before she passed in 2005. I was a Disaster Assistance Employee Public Affairs Officer with FEMA from 2004 to 2012. i also worked part time as military sales representative in local military exchanges representing JVC, Panasonic and Samsung.
I'm currently going through physical therapy and rehabilitation following six surgeries in a fourteen month period. Four involved my right knee replacement and the two others were for unrelated issues. I guess the power above and my excellent doctors have gotten me ready for another 69 years. While I enjoyed my part-time jobs and the people, I am rertired now, as I get ready to enter a new decade. I wish all friends and alumni good health and the best..
