Kenneth's Story

My wife Gayle and I have been blessed to have found each other. We plan to "stabilize" on longer-term housing after tomorrow's revisit to North Hills from our current Sylmar location. Before that were Canyon Country, Sun Valley, North Hollywood, MacArthur Park, Sacramento and a few others. We continue living each day free from harmful substances, alcohol and tobacco--only with the help from the Lord. Praise Him! Four decades of gradual escalation has ended for some years now! God has allowed us the luxury (necessity?) of our own laptop recently, enabling me to communicate with all my beloved classmates after all these years. I was actively employed for forty years as a cook, sheet metal worker, draftsman, designer, but mainly, 23 years at Burbank Water & Power ending as a state licensed ("grandfathered in") electrical engineering associate. I took occasional side jobs such as working for a landscape architect in the field. I have dabbled in guitar playing and music appreciation. I was actually a DJ on live radio for 12 whole minutes at a broadcasting school in Hollywood about 12 years ago. I am still deeply grieving the loss of my classmates to Vietnam. There are over twenty names on the plaques at the monument at the SE corner of McCambridge Park--people who I thought were destined to use their talents in other ways than giving their lives for their country--people who were familiar to me. I used to take my (previous) family on outings at beaches surfing and in the Sierras camping, hiking and fishing sometimes. As a UCLA math major for two years, I decided to withdraw voluntarily. On the job, I attended UCLA Extension and UC Berkeley Independent Study fo...Expand for more
r an extra year's worth of units for grade credit. I am re-admittable now and could/should/would do it eventually. At least I learned to spell UCLA Brewin' and how to tap kegs on fraternity row! I have never attended any of my high school reunions--but did appear at a Horace Mann Elementary School reunion that was awesome. I had some hesitation to write personal comments to individual classmates but I have started the process and will get around to as many more as I can. And, if I have insulted or seemed unkind to any classmates along the way, I am sorry for that, please forgive me! You could return the favor to me via this website, if you like, because I am only an equal-opportunity offender who tends to let brutal honesty override diplomacy or even propriety. By now, my hide should be plenty thick enough to take it! I have a special day coming up next month--two-thirds of a century! My weight is about one-ninth of a ton. Besides math, I liked philosophy. Cats with (only) nine lives got nuthin' on me! I am very grateful to be alive and in good health, but could always afford to be more graceful and humble about it (as I contemplate writing "How to Achieve Humility in Ten Easy Lessons"). One of my favorite songs lately was Joe Walsh's "I Guess I'm Lucky That Way". There are "Deadheads" around, but I found out the term that better describes my leanings--"Bobhead " (Dylan, of course). For those classmates that tended to call me "Superman", I had to abandon the moniker when I realized that I was not bulletproof after all. I did survive what I used to call the life of "Reckless Abandon" by realizing that abandoners get abandoned themselves, God Bless You All.
