Ken's Story

Life I left home when I was 17 years of age, and returned about two years later to attend classes at Rutgers University for about one year. Restless and desiring more out of life, I continued to attend college as my duty scheduled allowed in the U.S. Army. After one tour of duty in the Army's 82nd Airborne Division (Medical Corps), I worked for Citibank and continued to attend college part-time. Eventually, I earned a B.S. Degree in Business Management from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1993. My major was Management Science and Information Systems, with emphasis on Decision Support and Production Operations Research. Operations Research is an applied science concerned with quantitative and qualitative decision making generally involving optimal allocation and control of limited resources. Then my wife, two children, and I moved from Blacksburg, VA to Folsom, CA in 1993, where 3/4 of us still reside. My daughter April spends most of her time in the Boston, MA area. She graduated spring 2007, from Tufts University. My son Andy attends a local college and supports himself part-time at his off-campus rental home. His academic and career interests are in Audio Engineering. My first post-undergraduate position was with Intel Corporation. I have been with my current employer, Accenture, Ltd., since 09/05/95. Competency skill sets I acquired involve Business Process Engineering and Process Excellence in our Client Consulting Practice. Market units where I have industry experience include high tech in the telecomm industry during my first three years of service. After that and in my daughter's senior year in H.S., I transferred to our state and local government practice in Sacramento, CA. From that office, I worked on a wide variety of projects, and they all involve business, technology, and their effective integration and management. Now, my status is permanent medical long-term leave from my employer now. Life, as always, is unpredictable. However, adversity has not kept me from achieving goals in the past, and it never will. Consequently, we move forward optimistically, with expectations of continued success. In my spare time I enjoy fun and relaxing activities with my family, which includes our dogs (a.k.a., "The Fellas") Beamer (13 y.o.) and Henry (11 y.o.). I also spend a fair amount of time reading and applying information gleaned from current events, computers and electronics industry journals, and various areas of real estate investment, as well as stocks and business. Additionally my interests in our foreign, domestic, monetary and fiscal polices has peaked. I also follow and study U.S. and world political, economic, and military activities passionately. Typically in solitude, listening to music remains one my favorite pastimes - Classical, Classic R&B, Rock & Roll, Jazz, Opera, some Rap, and Soundtracks. These days I acquire most of my music through N2G. My wife, best friends, & I love the theater and arts. We attend operas, operettas, plays performed by amateurs and professionals, art auctions, etc. together when time permits. School Who was your biggest crush? Uhhh, I dunno. Names? I don't think so. I was attracted to many female classmates from elementary through H.S. For me, race was never an issue, but I was shy, and some kids from my neighborhood gave others a hard time or teased them about interracial relationships. Thus and regrettably, I avoided them. By the way, I placed no constraints on the term interracial. I was, and rem...Expand for more
ain, very open minded about race relations. Then, I did not care much about a girl's religion either. Later, I changed my mind about the latter – that is, for me. I respect other views, but this is the one for me. And if you could do it all over again, would you? Some. I would not joke around as much about being, "the greatest of all time," etc. Ali was my biggest hero - second only to my Father and big brother. I was totally joking, but a good friend told me in the Jr. H.S. library that kids were taking me seriously. I would have stuck with scouting, despite unfairly having to dress up as "go-go girl" during a Pack performance in elementary school. I drew Tim O'Conner as the "old man" on the television show Laugh-In, but the Den Mother switched her son's draw with mine because he was obese. Well, I wasn't the most slender kid on the block either -- not at 60 pounds in kindergarten. Thus, I never made it past Cub Scouts. Instead, I did the performance and quit. Consequently, I missed a fair amount of fun, interesting, and useful stuff. Oh yeah, I would not have climbed as many trees, crept around, or low-crawled through as much grass, to shoot as many people in my neighborhood, at basketball camp, etc. as possible with my scoped, Crossman pump action combination BB and .177 cal pellet gun. To all those whom I either frequently or singularly aligned in my cross hairs, I apologize. All victims in my neighborhood please recall that I was not alone. Kevin Stuart (RIP), tragically fallen in H.S. during one of our track practices (I was there) from a brain aneurism, had a BB gun as well. Therefore, I may not have been the one who shot you or who cleared the streets when the distinct sound of BBs cutting through the leaves of trees became recognizable. Caveat: I shall neither entertain nor engage in dialog involving PTSD. Which teacher inspired you most? Elementary school - Mr. Allen: Best and most fair principal in the system; Miss McGinn (sp?): I could never "pull the wool" over her eyes. She was aware of everyone and everything in her class at all times; Mrs. Henick: Hottest female teacher (her daughter too) in Springfield's school system, until Senorita Pshenae (sp?) in H.S.; Mrs. Ackerman and Mr. Guinea (sp?) made science and history interesting to me. Junior H.S. - Mr. Hannah (sp?): A disabled teacher, paralyzed from the waist down; Mr. Williams and my older brother Greg: The only black teacher in the school system, Mr. W. and my brother encouraged me to take math more seriously. Additionally, they inspired me to look beyond public school books for information concerning my Black and American Indian heritage; Mr. Blanda - Same as Miss McGinn above. H.S. - Mr. T. - Excellence personified, passionate, and a baaad dude (informed by my brother, who for many reasons, would know); Mr. Nash - Inspired me to be knowledgeable about the world and my surroundings at all times, read and listen critically, and to stand up for what is correct and just; Mr. Jones - A quiet but, also, baaaad professional. Unfortunately, I did not have the confidence academically to have him as a math instructor at that time. It would have been a privilege and an honor; Mr. Raymond Yanchus: The importance and shortcomings of our system of jurisprudence, and the values of team work, discipline, short term sacrifice for long term gain, and long suffering fidelity in his personal life (I won't hold his US Marine / Jar Head membership vs. Army agin' em' ;-). It seems to have served him and many of us well.
