Kent's Story
I graduated in 1989 when skipping out of school at Mouat usually landed us at Abby Sr. Mailbox baseball, and cowtipping on Vye Road were popular things to do. So was hanging out at Cultus Lake. I often think of those years in Abbotsford. The memories are great. Oriole Crescent, Mouat Drive, High Drive, Lower Sumas Mountain Road, and Mathers Way are all engrained in my mind. I suppose I'm just like any other person who longs for the good ol' days. When it comes to the grad year, Beach Boys Kokomo, Chicago, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, Neneh Cherry, Paula Abdul, Cinderella, Firehouse, Poison, Whitney Houston, and a few others artists were the staples.
I left High School, working for a glass company in Port Coquitlam. I met my first wife, at a friend's party. I still remember the big mickey mouse face that stared at me all night when I sat behind the bar, making sure I had everyone's car keys. I wouldn't doubt if she still had that sweater!! was out of work, with the exception of a sleezy bar dj gig that paid 'no money' in East Vancouver. We were living in her parents' basement while the rest of the people we knew were out buying homes and starting families.
Unfortunately, we went our separate ways. But my little girl still calls Abbotsford home. The Mouat 10 year reunion for the class of 89 was my 'kick in the pants'. I realized it was time to start working on 'that career'. I got into Broadcasting. Started as a weekend Traffic Reporter and part time evening personality with Rogers. I am currently Operations Manager for Peace River Broadcasting in Northwestern Alberta. We run 3 radio stations, one of which is a Hot New Country format. I have never stopped thinking about the 'homeland' nor the people I've met, and called friends from all those years ago. I find country music can usually capture those memories in a few good lyrics. I hope all the people I graduated with have found some kind of happiness in their lives. Those were good years.
