Kerry's Story

After high school I joined the military and went to the desert almost immediately. It WAS wha it WAS. A lot of people went. I had hardly unpacked my bags before it was over. Still, some died and that was unfortunate but, it WAS what it WAS. Most of life as I saw it and still do revolves around ideals. In that, there is hope. Money was never a problem getting yet obtaining peace and happiness these days is nearly impossible. How, then, could money be something that need be chased? If you have two dollars in your pocket, you have no excuse not to have a four dollar plan and, unless you are a pimp or a drug dealer, you have no legitimate reason to expect eight dollars from anything that you only put two dollars worth of work into. Anyway, love people and love yourself enough to be considerate of others. Start at home. It seems strange that many can kiss the hand that strikes them but turn around and bite the hand that feeds them. That bit is for the women AND the men. The Calling: My story is not unlike everybody else's story. It is my belief that we all graduated high school and had in mind that life out from under the roof of our parents was somehow easier. We made our own preset rules and were somewhat disappointed to found out that the world had its own and regarded our none at all. Nonetheless, we all pressed on. Some are no longer with us whether is was the misfortune of ill circumstance or the meeting of that final appointment that we all will make someday. We do not know. Fortunately, most are still with us pressing on to whatever calling we hope to reach. Here comes my opinion. We, or at least a large majority of us, still believe that success in life foll...Expand for more
ows a formula. That formula is believed to be education, career, money, family and a healthy helping of self-worth. Most of the time, it is in that exact order. If you have all of that or even a portion, congratulations. But, as for me, I have had, lost and regained them all and it did not feel much like success. It is my belief that success as we know it is relative. Just like most things that we consider to be truth, success is relative. As it relates to us, things take on meaning. I may say that a single mother who may only scrape by on food stamps but still manages to raise a God fearing, productive child is a success. This in my mind is truth. There are some who disagree. I spent 17 years going up the rough side of a mountain that was not mine to climb. I have in recent years been relieved of the treacheries of that mountain. I still have some jagged places in my journey but, my foot is made sure in God and that He has placed my steps. He alone has put me on this mountain and instead of climbing it, He is showing me how to move the mountain out of my way. My story is really not a story in the traditional sense of a story. It is a testimony of how a boy left home, got older, made plenty of poor decisions, went through many trials (literal and figurative), whose hand was against every man, who finally submitted to God, then became a man (still flawed) but a man. A lot of details are left out in this story; but, I suppose that any good story leaves more tracks in the imagination than ink on the paper. Nevertheless, I have seen much, been to many places in the world and still, at heart, am longing for a quiet place to be at peace enough to hear God when He calls.
