Kerry's Story

I live on Hilton Head Island , SC with my wife of 42 years, Kelly Richard, who is a sculptor with many sculptures in public and private venues across South Carolina and Georgia. We are both still good friends with my first wife, Cathy and her husband Roy who live in Columbia South Carolina near my daughter. We stay at their house and they stay at ours when in the neighborhood. I have two children. A daughter Shane who is 47 and lives in Columbia, SC with her husband who owns a dive shop. She is a managing nurse and has a 19 year old daughter who goes to Clemson University and is studying abroad in Italy this summer. My son Kerry Jr. who is 51 lives in Beaverton, Oregon and and owns a company that creates and produces music for commercials. He did all of the music for Levis for 5 years and has 3 Cleos which are the Oscars for advertising. He and his wife have a 14 year old daughter named Ivy who is becoming quite a character artist. I Graduated from the Naval Academy in 1970 and worked for the Physical Education department there until I went on Submarines in 1971. I left the Navy in 1976 and worked in Hospital Supplies and then in Government contracting as an engineer for the Trident Submarine Program, the Undersea Surveillance Program, Undersea Special Operations program and the Space Station Phase B Program. I got a Masters in Business Administration with a specialty in Computer Systems from George Mason University in 1982. I ran a Systems integration company which specialized in Digital Imaging of fingerprints, for 8 years and when my wife Kelly, was attacked and stabbed at our home, I left that position to help her recover and start her own business. ring that period I entered a 5 year program leading to ordination in the Episcopal Church. During this time ( through a wierd set of circumstances) I became President of one of the largest mental health agencies for the homeless in Washington DC run by the Catholic Archdiocese of Washington, reporting directly to Cardinal Hickey. I left there in 2005 when they merged the agency with Catholic Charities and opened a Kitchenwares store, "The Cooks' Revenge", on Main St. in Annapolis. Last Spring, when business started going bad, I took an engineering management job with a $100M energy managment company where I was by far the oldest person in the company by about 30 years. I had an office across from the New York Stock Exchange on Wall Street, but I work at home most of the time when I was not on the road. I retired from the Energy industry in 2019 and moved to Hilton Head Island, SC. While I was working in the Energy field, I was also the Archdeacon for the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland (which comes with the title "The Venerable" which means "wise because of you are old", The Reverend is hard enough to live up to when you behave like I do)and chaplain to our bishop who is the first African American Bishop of Maryland. After 7 years serving in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, I was assigned by the National church to be the Episcopal Chaplain at the US Naval Academy from 2011-2015. What a great experience. Today I am retired and as busy as ever working part time for the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, assisting my wife with her business, working in several social justice programs on the Island and keeping up with the maintenance on my 30+ year old house.
