Kevin's Story
Military
I joined the Marine Corp PLC Program while a freshman at Manhattan College. In 1966 I was commissioned a 2d Lt. and after 5 months at Quantico and 3 months at Ft. Sill, OK, I was sent to Vietnam in April, 1967 as a Forward Observer with C Co, 1/3 on the DMZ. After 7 1/2 months as an FO I was transferred back to an artillery battery (A, 1/12)and finished my 13 months at Camp Carroll.
In May, '68 I returned home and became a Battery Commander in Camp Lejeune (H, 3/10) before being transferred to the Regimental staff a few months before leaving active duty.
After release from active duty in May, 1968, I began a very long relationship with 2d Bn, 25th Marines, a reserve infantry battalion in Garden City, LI where I was first an 81mm Mortar Platoon Commander and later spent several years in the Operations section including two tours as the Operations Officer (S-3). Later I served as the Battalion Executive Officer and, from 1984-86, as the Ba...Expand for more
ttalion Commander. Interspersed with the battalion assignments were several tours with a section of the 4th Marine Division staff, also in Garden City, that provided staff training to other battalions across the country. Most of the training involved simulations and computer simulations of combat plans for the individual units.
In 1992 I retired from the Marine Corps as a Colonel after 30 years of service.
Unlike the reservists of today, I was only called to active duty on two occasions, both due to strikes at the US Postal Service. I missed Desert Storm because I was in the middle of one of only three periods in 30 years when I did not have an active assignment with the Reserves. During that short period my only contribution was giving interviews to NY TV stations.
I still remain in regular contact with both the infantry and artillery units from Vietnam and with many of the reservists from 2/25. The 30 years, to put it mildly, was a great run.
