Kevin's Story

Hello to Anyone who may remember me, but, lost contact. My story begins in a blue collar neighborhood in Buffalo, New York. The very first place I recall living was my Grandparents home on Liberty Terrace in Buffalo. I next lived in an upstairs flat above a dry cleaners at 1746 Main St. While living there, I attended PS #17 for Kindergarden and 1st grade. Unhappy with my progress in that school, my folks enrolled me at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic grade school (also located on Main St.). Unfortunately, I had to do 1st grade over. Shortly after starting at St Vinnie's, we moved to 27 Orchard Place. This is a small 2 story, 3 bedroom frame home near the corner of Fillmore and Main. My Dad remodeled the attic into a fourth bedroom. The attic then became my space. My fondest childhood memories stem from that location. In 4th grade, I got into a heck of a heap of trouble at St. Vinnie's, so my parents pulled me out and enrolled me in PS #54, also on Main St., but, closer to our home. I got in plenty of trouble there too, but, somehow managed to graduate 8th grade on time. A Catholic priest once told me "Anyone named Kevin is just born into trouble, yet you somehow find ways in which to amplify and broadcast it." Strangely enough, having had a bad experience in Catholic grade school didn't stop me from enrolling in Bishop Fallon Catholic High School. Oddly enough, also located on Main St. Looking back, I find it very weird that every school I attended in Buffalo was located on Main St. And, I've checked, plenty of Buffalo schools are NOT located on Main St. Once in high school, the economy in Buffalo began to shrink. So much so that Dad had to find work elsewhere. At the end of my sophomore year, the family moved to Denver Colorado. Thus began a new phase of my life. In Denver, where I knew not a soul, I retreated inward, becoming just a lump in a desk at South Denver High. One positive aspect is that it wasn't located on Main St.! It's on Louisiana Ave. The family also moved twice while in Denver. First living at 123 Grant Ave, a big, old brick two story and then living on Washington Ave, a single story craftsman style house with a full basement. I spent much of my time in my basement bedroom where I listened to Dad's old Jazz albums from the 40's & 50's. Many hours were spent ruminating on either why it was a good thing to leave Buffalo, or how I would eventually find my way back. I spent just my junior year at South Denver High. Only in the last couple of months did I begin to open up to the other students. Then it all ended once again as Dad's temporary assignment in Denver came to a halt. Dad's priority, as it should be, was to put food on the table and a roof over our heads. So, finding nothing else in Denver, in the summer of '62, we hopped in the family car and headed for Los Angeles, California. Once there Dad found work at Hughes Aircraft in Culver City. We moved to a small residential enclave by the ocean called El Segundo. Here we lived in a single story spanish style stucco house at 409 E. Maple Ave. The weather is wonderful in El Segundo, blessed by ocean breezes, there is no smog and no hot summer days nor cold winter days. Year around average temperature is about 65 deg. This is where I spent my senior year in high school, El Segundo High. Oh, the curse has returned, it's on Main St.! And, so, I graduated with dubious credentials at best in June, 1963. My transcripts from Bishop Fallon had been lost. Denver didn't count my f...Expand for more
reshman year because they start high school at 10th grade. With incomplete records, El Segundo relied on information provided by my best recollection of my freshman year at Bishop Fallon. Once again, as a student I remained aloof and made few friends. In September of 1963 I enrolled myself at El Camino Community College as a Business major. Interestingly enough, this is where I made friends with many kids from El Segundo High. I began to realize that my world hadn't ended, only changed. I was having so much fun with my new found friends that I neglected my school work. So it was that in November of that year when I turned 19, I received a letter from the local Draft Board ordering me to present myself for a pre-enlistment physical exam. This I did in mid december and of course passed. In January, right after the winter / spring semester began, I got the Draft notice ordering me to present myself for induction to the US Army in mid February. This I never did. Very early on the sunday morning before the monday that I was to be inducted, my friend's 1953 Mercury Sunliner, that I was a front seat passenger in, skidded off the Sepulveda to Imperial Hwy on ramp at around 85 MPH and flipped and or rolled down an embankment. Amazingly, we both survived. Merlin broke several bones on the right side of his body and I suffered compression fractures of 3 vertebrae in my lower back. Well, that took care of induction into the army. Due to swelling and bruising of my spinal cord, I lay in the county hospital paralyzed from the bottom of my chest cage to my toes for weeks. Once again, I thought my life was over. Yet, life goes on and I mostly recovered. Even today, I suffer occasional lower back pain, especially when seated for long periods . Adding insult to injury, I actually lost about an inch in height as the swelling subsided and my back readjusted for the missing bone and discs. After recovering, I went to work, fell in love with my first, only and current wife, Lorraine North. Lorraine was a year behind me at El Segundo High. We met through association of a mutual friend shortly after Lorraine's graduation. I also went back to school earning a two year degree in Tool Engineering, had 4 beautiful children, 3 girls, 1 boy. During this time period we also moved from California to Washington and then to Oregon. As I prepare to retire, we are also preparing to move to Arizona. Our daughter Stephanie, her husband Eisley and identical twin 3 year old boys, Braden and Connor along with our youngest daughter, Jennifer and her husband Sean make their homes in Phoenix, Arizona metro area. Our oldest daughter, Lisa lives on Maui in Hawaii. Our son, Eric passed away at age 23 in 1993. All three of our daughters are college graduates. Lisa holds a dual Masters in Sociology and Counseling; Stephanie holds a BS in Psychology and is working on a Masters in Education; Jennifer holds a BS in Education with teaching credentials. Our son, Eric was working on a BA in English and Creative Writing when he became ill and passed away. I am very proud of my children. My hobbies and activities include reading, mostly non fiction and history with a dose of Scifi and humor. I also like to Fly fish, hike and walk. I spend time doing genealogy, researching, surfing and blogging on the web. I love a good bottle of red wine shared among friends. I would love to hear what others have been doing, especially those from my distant past. Thanks and Best Regards to All, -Kevin
