Kevin's Story

Life After HS I worked briefly, for a while as a professional musician (piano), a security guard, and in sales briefly until I had enough of the "freedom" and spinning my wheels. I went back to school, working full time while attending school full time (made for some long days), receiving my electrical engineering degree in 1977, graduating first in my class with a 4.0 GPA. I then worked as a design engineer at a few places in the Chicago suburbs, got married in 1978, we had our first child in 1979, and in 1980 we moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico after I was hired by Sandia National Laboratories, a DOE nuclear weapons design lab. I was also offered a position at Los Alamos Labs, but that town gets serious snow and cold, and the area and labs felt a bit too cliqueish and elitist to me. Albuquerque is friendlier, and the weather can't be beat!! I hired on at Sandia in 1980 and I worked as a design engineer in the areas of particle beam fusion target experiments, weapon system engineering, and radar fuzing design engineering, as well as a few very interesting and challenging "black" programs while in systems, at the same time advancing my education further with out-of-hours courses the company paid for. I finished my advanced classes in 1988, including some at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. Among my proudest achievements at Sandia is winning the coveted DOE Defense Programs Award Of Excellence. I spent 25 years at Sandia and took an early retirement at age 51, in Nov. 2...Expand for more
005, after some wise investments paid off very well after the upsurge from 2003 to 2005. Why work if you don't have to? Now I spend my time with my two sons (and recently, our new daughter-in-law although we think of her as a daughter), pursuing my hobbies, traveling, adding improvements to our house (a pool table and a patio screen room are two recent additions), and pursuing other interests like geocaching. My wife Pam and I are going to be celebrating our 30th anniversary this year. We have two grown sons, Thomas and Justin (29 and 24 respectively). Justin is a successful musician/student and Thomas ("TJ" as his friends call him) is in medicine. Justin just got married August 2008 - one of the proudest days of my life! For our 25th wedding anniversary I tool the whole family to Egypt where we toured sites from Cairo to Luxor. My hobbies include video creation and authoring, music, billiards, woodworking, photography, and computer programming. I run an internet discussion forum called Conversation Pit (convopit.org) as sort of a hobby. We have a regular membership there and have over 240,000 articles posted since Feb. 2005. I recently began geocaching as a hobby which allows me to have fun while walking 3 to 6 miles a day. It's a sort of hi-tech treasure hunt or easter egg hunt using GPS receivers. I am thoroughly enjoying my early retirement. Most days I can be identified by the permanent grin on my face, like the cat that swallowed the canary. Life is good!!
