Kevin's Story

Life ISN'T LIFE AN ADVENTURE...to qoute the Dead "What a long strange trip its been. I enlisted in the Army in 1982, taking wedding vows just 11 days prior to leaving for basic. Called Fort Ord, Ca. and the 7th Infantry (Monterey) home for three years, just enough time to become a father, a Non-Comissioned-Officer, Ranger Light Fighter, and a splatter at the bottom of mountain after my driver took us off a cliff 144 feet. I survived the fall, but recovery took most of two years, parenthood came again, a BA in Studio Art from Adrian College in 91, and candidate for another degree in Music in 95...atleast I stayed true to my SHHS curriculum. I became a professional student\artist\musician getting involved with the National Office of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, the Lenawee County United Veterans Council, the 1997 Can-Am Pistol & Shooting Team, and PAWS With A Cause Service Canines. I also became a US National Squad Archer at the International Paralympic Committees Archery Championships in Madrid, Spain (Sept. 2003); vying for a spot at the 2004 Olympiad; which I did! At the 2004 Summer Games in Athens, Greece, we landed the very first Team Event medal, and I have a Bronze to be proud of...Life has been an adventure. What I remember from High School isn't much...NO!, not what ya think :) I'm a super-jock now...lol. It was the injuries that rob me of most of my teen memories. I seem to only remember the ladies and the music (but isn't that what's most important anyway?); though the Great Walk Out (or the Big Bust) seems pretty fresh, that rusty 69 Charger, and my job teaching guitar in that stripmall up the street. As far as those 3 summers, 4 mays, 7 full years, and 212 credit hours of college go...those top off the best years of my life. A good friend wrote to me upon my 91 graduation, "A gentalman choses his friends because of thier learning and culture; he relies on his friends to nuture his virtue (Confucius)"...and boy did they nuture me : ) I'm single now, living and training in Tennessee. I won the US a slot to compete in Beijing this year at the IPC Archery World Championships in Korea. I looking forward to a great year, and get to compete in Europe twice, possibly Brazil, and of course getting to live in the Olympic village for a month in Beijing will be too sweet. I'll send a pic from the Great Wall. Well, I just posted that pic from the great wall and added a few others. Beijing was immense, Beijing was awsome, Beijing was safe, Beijing made me proud to be an American Athlete. I may not have brought home the Individual medal I was striving for this time around, but I did manage to shoot my highest ever scores, breaking two records, and I got the very first competition win in the Archery Finals Stadium, in front of my daughter...no better way to retire (smiles). For those with Myspace, just look for kevinjstone, and I'll be there w/ pics, videos, and blogs. looking forward to old freinds once again at our 30th reunion. Peace to all! School High School, Hmmm...let's see. I remember the clix; Jocks, geeks, burn-outs, and the like. I remember being the academically gifted student that never needed to apply himself, so I skipped by on "B"s when I could've have got "A"s; ...Expand for more
or skipped a grade ahead. Partied way too much inbetween classes out the back door, or behind the Fire Station...somebody stop me anytime :) Even though I had a hazy time at school, the prep-center's commercial art courses prepared me for my current vocation in commercial arts. Mr. Scorupa was way cool, patient, and looked the other way many a time; I truly thank him for that. And, I had a crush on my Physical Siences Teacher. Yet, the best thing for me, whether it was school/military/college, was the relationships I made. I had some of best friends a person could meet. My girlfriends were plenty, but I chased after the wrong ones (that sounds bad), had great long-term loves, stupiditly broke up with best, and never appreciated or even noticed the ones who saw the real me...Sorry! SHS was a great growing ground. It was nice to be the guy that could get along with all the different types of students. Rockin' out at the Guitar shop as a Teacher was a great job at 16. Going to Cobo's many classic concerts (KISS & Uriah Heep was an awesome first stadium experience). And, since the Army injury took away the rest of those SHS memories; Thanks and Appologies to everyone else. In the end, y'all helped to shape the person I am now...it's a groovy thing indeed... Peace College Well, well, well... Love and Respect to my brothers of BLS, and ATO...you're my family till the day I die, and I thank God for all of you (and for being housed along side with the sororities :). To everyone else, including some of you Professors out there; Thanks for making my academic career as the best 7 years of my life. The only regret was in not finishing that second degree; but I had no control over that. I learned more from my colleagues then I did from the classes I beleive. We grew up, together (even though I came in at 27), and built upon one another, to shape us into to who were are now. That is the single most important benefit that came from going to Adrian. True Liberal Arts education is communal in the sense that we learned from each other. My greatest memories had to be during the 90-91 year. The re-initiation of ATO back to campus, misspelling all our ATO event banners and flyers, our triumphant Winning Sweep over Greek Week, my Senior Art Exhibit, and running concurrently...being in the "pit" for GODSPELL (playing 3 guitars, a uke, tamborine, and the "funky-funky" slide-whistle); probably the best theatrical experience ever to grace the stage of Downs Hall...Ever!..and of course...finally graduating! I've been fortunate to have an intrical part of the college and my Fraternity as a local alumnus. But, that time is coming to a close. As I go off to compete 'round the world in the next 21 months, I'll have to leave that behind. In the end, I'll end up in Florida with the rest of our Alumni, coming back only for Homecoming. But never forgetting the parties I've hosted, including four of the most succesful Homecoming parties. Special thanks to Carrol Blair '93' for blessing our home, after the 2000 Homecoming Chapel Service...every event here has been blessed from that day forward...Cool! Stay in touch gang! It's easy to email...go for it!..Homecoming is a long way away. Peace Kevin 91' and almost 95'
