Kim's Story

Life I live in Brooklyn with my 12 year old daughter, Sharru, and my boyfriend Robert. Oh yes and I can't forget the dogs, Kasha and Rusty (I swear I didn't name him that!) After graduation I lingered around Lafayette and Tennessee for a year until I got up the nerve to leave the midwest. I traveled around the country hitch hiking and camping, landing in S.F. for the winter. I traveled and camped the next summer where I met a group of New Yorkers who invited me to stay with them and I've been a New Yorker ever since! I lived in Brooklyn for a year, then moved upstate to have a kid (Sharru...the love of my life). Moved back to Brooklyn in 1999 to live with my boyfriend who was one of the people who invited me here originally. I LOVE this city and hope to never leave. School Oy! What to say?! If it weren't for my art teachers, I wouldn't have made it to graduation! My life was sooo chaotic, I'm still shocked and amazed that I was able to make it to graduation! My sophomore year I decided to move to a group home because my family was driving me insane. So at 16 I became a grateful ward of the state. Most of my friendships went down the toilet through all this crazy process, but for the friends that stuck by my side, I am eternally grateful. My art classes were the only places that made me feel like I had a place of my own and I credit that to both the teachers and the fellow students. They created such a warm and fun atmosphere, I couldn't have asked for a better family. As we moved into our junior and senior years, all my fellow students were so friendly, saying hi in the halls and making jokes... it was lovely and made those years bearable. Thanks! College I am majoring in psychology at Brooklyn College and working toward an art therapy masters. I was planning on going to art school after graduation but was low on cash and motivation. I tried to make a living and support my daughter without an education but ...Expand for more
it was too difficult to find a job that didn't bore me to death. So when I moved back to Brooklyn I applied to Brooklyn College. I am finishing my 4th year now and have one more semester to go. I'm planning on going to grad school at SVA to get an art therapy masters, finances and admissions willing. If that falls through then I will get a masters in art education to teach K-12. My grades stunk in junior high and high school, but now I have almost straight A's! It's amazing what a few years out in the real world can do for you! Workplace My favorite jobs are in teaching, art and therapy. My best therapist and surrogate mother was my art teacher, Stephany Funcheon. I've worked in after school programs with high school students here in Brooklyn and LOVED it and hopefully that is where my college degree will lead me. Other than being a mom, it took me a long time to find a steady job that's been worth keeping long-term, but I've had a lot of fun trying out different things and learning a great deal from each one. Here's a fun list of jobs I've held, starting with my earliest jobs as a kid.... Newspaper delivery person, corn detassler, babysitter, housecleaner, cookie baker, Subway sandwich maker, set designer and decorator, sign painter, artist's/illustrator's model (an ongoing job since high school), geriatric nursing assistant (my favorite job ever but pay is crap), newspaper photographer and darkroom technician, Pizza Hut waitress (don't laugh), furniture mover, antique furniture refinisher and sales person, costume designer and seamstress, actor (music videos), bead weaver (Native American genre art sold at festivals), illustrator (stickers, t-shirts and other gift items sold at music festivals), and most recently, quilter. Of course the best job I've had pays no money. Did I mention I love being a mom? Military No way! Never! Not when psychos can be president! Anyway, war mostly harms the innocent. What a waste.
