Kim's Story
Life
Married 20 years to Daniel Katka--also a 1986 Mellen graduate. We have 5 children--3 boys, 2 girls. Oldest child is 17, youngest is 9. My husband Dan is an officer in the Air Force (Captain) We are actively involved in the home church community here in San Antonio, TX. We have twin boys that were diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (a slowly progressive muscular dystrophy)..Our children's unique situation has given us tremendous opportunities as a family to reach out to other parents/families in dealing with the heartbreak of serious (often fatal) childhood diseases. We know that with God all things are possible; our hope, joy and peace all come from Him!!!
I work part-time at Walgreens as a Beauty Advisor and I also am heavily involved in volunteer work. I volunteer for the San Antonio Police Department in their domestic violence unit, helping to empower battered women to free themselves from their tragic situations; I also volunteer weekly at an AIDS hospice, helping to feed, encourage, and serve those dying from AIDS.

School
I was enrolled in Mellen Public School from K through 12. I have alot of great memories and probably wouldn't change a thing. Among my huge circle of friends I am the only one to have experienced such a small town/small school situation....
College
I went to WITI in Superior, WI ...Expand for more
right after high school and graduated from the Word Processing Specialist program. I stayed in Crownhart Hall (dorm)the entire year. My first roommate was Lori Bell (from Highbridge, WI) My second roommate was Deanna Mesner from Washburn. I maintained an A-B average the entire time. I had an awesome, extremely exciting experience--It was everything I thought it would be AND more!!
Workplace
Peterson Wood Treating, Inc., Superior, WI was my first job out of WITI--I made $5.00 an hr (yikes). After getting married I moved to San Antonio, TX and worked at a dept. store (NOT for me) and ended up working at an insurance company (Asset Management Group) handling insurance claims and dealing with Life Insurance and Trusts. I was senior manager of the Life Department when I quit to have my first child. After 20 years of being a stay at home mom, I recently started working as a Beauty Advisor at Walgreens. I love making great commissions while helping women look their very best!!
Military
My husband Dan has been active duty Air Force for 19 years. He spent 13 years as an enlisted member (Staff Sgt). In June of 2002 he was commissioned as an officer in the Air Force. He is a Captain and is currently the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, TX. I love being an "officer's" wife and could not have dreamed up a better outcome for us and our family ;-)
