Kim's Story

After graduation, I went to work at the old rope factory full time, while still working part time at Mercy Hospital. In Sept of 74, I joined the U.S. Air Force. I went to Basic Training in San Antonio, Tx. until Nov. 74, at which time I transfered to Witchita Falls, Tx. for Aircraft Maintenence Technical School. I then was transfered to my first permanent assignment at Del Rio, Tx. I joined the military to travel and see the world and for the first three and a half years all I saw was Texas and a little bit of Mexico, mostly Ciadad Acuna. Jan. 78 I was again transferred, this time to Northern California, Beale AFB, the Air Forces home of the Spy Planes, the SR-71 and the U-2,(the aircraft, not the band). I gave up the fun times with the military for a short time and returned to good old Auburn. I went to work at Austeel for a few months, then was laid off.I rejoined the military and they rewarded me by stationing me at good old Plattsburgh AFB NY. I remained there for 3 years at which time I was transferred to a nice little island in the Mediteranian called Sardinia, Italy. I visited several wonderful places from there to include Rome and Germany. It was a short assignment of only a year, but I would trade several of my other fond experiences to have been able to remain on that little island for the rest of my military career. Oh, I forgot to mention, while stationed there, We had our first encounter with Libyia. And I also got married....Expand for more
It didn't last. Moving on, I was reassigned to Tx.- Del Rio again. Stayed there 3 more Years, then was reassigned to England. We had our second encounter with Libyia while I was there. Met some really wonderful people there and even dated a Playboy Bunny that worked at the Playboy club in London. I visited several historic sites to include the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Parliment, and also rode a motorcycle around the entire British Isle to include Scottland and Wales. It was a glorious assignment. Again moving on after a short 3 years I was then assigned to a base in southern California at Victorville. I found out what an earthquake really felt like there as i experienced several of them, just missing the big one that hit San Fran by a week. I met my second and still present wife there, and was blessed with the birth of our wonderful daughter prior to be reassigned yet again, this time to South Carolina and here is where i have finally been able to plant down roots and call somewhere a permanent home. We retired from the military after 20 years of service and have been rewarded with a nice little pension and other benefits. I have enjoyed several different jobs since retirering from Uncle Sams fun camp to include a Dye house(factory) maintenence worker, 13 years working for the state of S.C. as a Corrections Officer, ( I even got the chance to experience a riot), and am now currently employed as an auto mechanic.
