Kim's Story
Life
Well, let's see...after I left high school, I worked for a while in Toronto and then moved to Montreal in 1980 to learn to speak French. After a year there, I moved back to Brampton to work (don't ask me why! I'll never know). I eventually ended up working as a salesperson for a pharmaceutical company and then for ReMax until I had my twins (boy and girl), Malcolm and Lila, in 1997. Their dad (Rudy Williams, aka Junior) and I split up when I was pregnant, after a long relationship. So, I've been raising them on my own. Needless to say, life was quite challenging in those early years, but now I can say that these are the best years of my life. I've never been happier. The kids are the greatest gift I've ever received.
The three of us moved from Brampton to Ottawa in 1999 so I could get that university education that I didn't know I wanted when I was young and foolish (I'm a late bloomer!). This year (2004)I graduated with an Honours Degree in Translation from U of Ottawa and a certificate in French as a second language from Université Laval in Québec City. I work for myself from home as a freelance translator (French to English) and editor and have just started my Masters at University of Ottawa; who knows...I may eventually complete my PhD. I figure...what the heck...I'll...Expand for more
be 55 one day anyway, so I might as well be 55 with a PhD., n'est pas? If I'm not done by the time I'm 55, I just hope I get it done before I retire!
My kids started their schooling at a French school in Québec City (where we lived the year they started kindergarden). They will be starting Grade 3 at the French school across the street from us here in Ottawa in September (2005).
I have been with a wonderfu Québecois man with two children of his own for almost four years now. Things are challenging when blending families like this, as many of you probably know. Especially when there is a difficult ex (his) and different parenting philosophies at play. If all this doesn't distance us, it will make us stronger!!! Day to day, we spend most of our time doing kid things...lots of running around to lessons, Scouts, orchestra practices, homework, resolving conflict, etc., but we also manage to go out for a nice dinner now and again and travel a bit without the kids to keep things spicey. Hope it keeps working!
We live about 15 minutes from the Byward Market and Parliament Hill, in Aylmer, Québec (just the other side of the Ottawa River from Ottawa). Each summer, my kids and I spend one month camping and one month visiting Québec City (our favourite city).
Cheers everyone!
