Kimberly's Story
Life
Lets see---Got my Associates Degree in Business Management, then I obtained my Bachelor's Degree in English. Spent 13 years as a Restaurant Manager, then drifted through a few other jobs while trying to figure out what to do next. I never had children which was my dream and I was grieving for years. My first marriage broke up and then I married my best friend a few years later and we hit #15 this year. Terry said I should go back to school and pursue my childhood dream of teaching. I had wanted to teach history since age 10, but my first advisor told me I'd never get in the field of teaching & to find something else. (Seems like all the good jobs went to the older Boomers anyhow.) So in 2003 I went back to get my Master's in Social Sciences and graduated this past May (2006) from Hollins University in Roanoke, VA. I'm currently doing a Distance Learning Program thru Liberty University seeking a Master's or an Ed D in Education. Then I will teach, hopefully. Possibly I will get a Provisional License to teach this fall in English, History, Government & Geography. It's hard going back to school in your 40's -- your memory isn't what it used to be!! We presently live in Lynchburg, VA where my sister (Debbie Keay McPherson) lives and where my parents will be joining us this spring. They will be living across the street from each other. She was a nurse for years and now is a home schooling mom to her son and 2 daughters and is married to a Scotsman just like my Dad in case any of you remember. Dad was Director of Bethel Bible Village and he was in People Magazine, Guideposts and Southern Living Magazine (& a book has been published as well: "Child of Pain, Children of Joy"); plus, on Geraldo and Dobson) years ago for being a...Expand for more
n "interesting" person in that he came to the U.S. from Scotland when he was a child then was raised in a boys home in NJ for 9 years after his mom went into a sanatorium for tuberculous--expecting to die like her mother. They wanted to profile his extraordinary rise from the trenches of abuse in a children's home to Director of a thriving children's home of his own. Anyhow, the "Scottishness" explains the spelling of our name, Keay, which is Gaelic, and translates in English to Key. In Gaelic, the emphasis is on the 2nd vowel according to my favorite English professor who was from Princeton with a PHD--and who am I to argue? Now, you've learned a little about the Keay family. Any of you who knew my brothers -- well, Brian has 4 sons and lives in Asheville and Alan, a confirmed bachelor resides in Los Angeles. Hey y'all have a great and blessed life and feel free to email me.
College
College was so much fun for me that it seems to have erased most memories of high school. What a contrast of atmospheres as well. The liberation from my father's strict home, the freedom, the fun, the hours of intense study and debate, sleepless nights, the discovery of others, their beliefs, their customs; the wonderful dating life (my college was 70% guys..... We women were never out of dates!!) The travel I did during this time was phenomenal as well: Europe, South America, Middle East -- whew what experiences! Will anything ever compare again, I ask?! The extra-curricular life was awesome as well -- the clubs, the organizations, sports, etc. I thrived at college & it was a wonderful time of self-discovery and a belief formulating process. Would love to go back to those days, but I'd definitely have to bring my husband along for the ride.
