Kimberly's Story

Life Friends! I'm putting together a set of biographical articles about people who have lived in La Mirada, which will be kept at the La Mirada library, for future generations' referece. Please phone me at 714-523-7807, or contact me at our company website (see below), to catch up on all these years. I would love to hear what you're doing and most like to do, how you came to La Mirada, about your family, anyone you've kept in touch with.... I'm living in La Mirada again, since Christmas of 2003. It's become a truly great city ~ always took it for granted, of course. We're loving being here, seeing the sun come in every day through the walls of glass they used in building these houses. The City's motto is "Dedicated to Service," and they mean it. There's a very huge park, which includes a 27-hole frisbee golf course, across the street from La Mirada High School. It's one of the best such courses in the world, and people fly in just to play it. Since my family used to travel a lot on vacations, I always wanted to live "far away" and so, I've lived in Kuala Lumpur, in Pacifica south of San Francisco, and also, on several hundred acres in remote Lake County, Northern California. But after all that, I can say it's very fine to be living back in La Mirada! We have one son, who started on computers at age 7, with the Vic-20, and is now working in that field. Like all parents, I would love to go on and on about him, but I'll let him do that in HIS Classmates page. Suffice it to say he's an amazing person. I am teaching elementary school as a Substitute teacher for LAUSD, which I've been doing for about 20 years. Before that, I had a photography business for ten years, first in Long Beach, then in San Francisco. Throughout my housewife years I was a health-food devotee, attended all the National Health Federation conventions, read Adelle Davis, took vitamins. Am still quite interested in health-promoting activities. To relax I maintain severa...Expand for more
l websites ~~~ Chicken-Feed, Curry Powder, Adelle Davis Revisited, Etymology-to-the-Max, Paris Cannings ~~~ play tennis, garden, sleuth out genealogy. (My G-g-grandfather's brother, George Baltriune Canning, destroyed the whole Yankee whaling fleet in the Civil War, off Alaska, and managed to keep his identity a secret in the process. The Internet has just recently blown his cover, by letting me connect with some Civil War historians who have long been trying to learn his identity. Things like this make genealogy fascinating.) The "etymology" website is about a discovery I made, that there is a persistent pattern of meanings in (apparently) all the world's languages, that points to the time of firemaking, and that seems evidential that the great vocabulary burst of language occurred at that time, 500,000 years ago. I was totally AGOG with this for several years. I collected words that begin with the sound of K-vowel-N, from foreign-language dictionaries from 42 languages around the world. The more I read, the more the pattern began fleshing itself out. Finally, after 3 years of collecting, with 7,000 entries in my notebook, I put them into a spreadsheet program (remember Lotus 123?) and sorted them carefully into meaning groups. It's unmistakable. The /K-vowel-N/ sound connoted (or rather "evoked") the entire firemaking ritual and all its salient aspects: fire/brightness, leader's titles, rods and grooves (the firemaking tool at that time was a rod-shaped stick rubbed back and forth through a grooved piece of wood), chanting, congregating, and the biggest group ~ the power of generation of life. My husband, Keith Salisbury, who I am also totally agog over, teaches classical guitar & performs. And currently, we have a product which Keith invented, snaggy pads that get your vehicle unstuck. We're enjoying our foray into the business world. The name is Lions Grip Traction Pads (tm)... please Google us! Kim Packard Salisbury La Mirada
