Kimberly's Story

Wow. Life certainly changed over the last year. On February 22nd of 2007, I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma of the Left Breast. Since that time, I was treated at the Lombardi Cancer Center in Washington, DC. I have completed my chemotherapy treatments and most surgeries. This has definitely given me a far greater appreciation of what my mom went through many years ago. Due to my family history, my oncologist advised an extremely aggressive treatment plan. I had bilateral mastectomies with immediate expander reconstruction, an implanted port for lab draws and medication administration. This was followed after some recovery time by 4 treatments of Adriamycin and Cytoxan and then on 2 treatments with Taxol. I wasn't able to complete all four treatments as I had a reaction to the Taxol. Each course of treatment had it's grueling side effects. The worst is lingering peripheral neuropathy which has caused some gait disturbance. Okay, I now waddle! I use a walker or a cane to get around... I do get all of the cushy parking spots.... The worst thing... I WANNA DANCE!! hehe I'm here, I'm alive. I'm not gonna complain. Two more surgeries late last year and I thought I was done... Not quite yet. The tumor was a triple-negative (rarest combination, least known and as of now, no additional therapy past surgery and iv chemo, radiation) Last su...Expand for more
rgery went well. whew. Had my 1 year follow up with the Oncologist. Pretty cool to hear him call me a cancer survivor and not a cancer patient. It is now routine 3 month follow up appointments for the next year, then I get to move them out to every 6 months until that magical 5 year mark. I don't know what God has in store for me in regards to this journey but we will continue to praise Him for His grace and guidance. I truly understand that Each and Every day we are given is a blessing. My strength also comes from my darling husband Josh. He's my rock. He's wisking me away to the Western Carribean for a week in October.... I can't wait.... My babies are no longer little. The oldest is going to college in a few months. (Woo Hoo) Number 2 is going to be a Junior and the baby is in middle school. We are thinking about adopting as Josh and I would like to have one of our own..... We are looking into the foster care system.... I hate to say that an illness has allowed me to reconnect with friends but it has.... Steph Swanson, Steven Seay.... I got to talk to Suzette Rickenbacker a few days ago... Drop by at myspace, look up Kimber Abbott zip 22554 and say hi or if you get a chance to drop an email at kfabbott04 at yahoo. Or, if anyone happens to be around the DC area, let me know... And..... If you haven't done so this month..... CHECK 'EM!
