Kirk Antes:

CLASS OF 1971
Whittier, CA

Kirk's Story

After graduation, I worked for a few years in a print shop, while attending college at night. That just didn't seem to be working for me, so in 1972, I joined the California Air National Guard and went away for Basic Training and nine months of Electronics School - trying to find myself. Through this training, I discovered that electronics was fun as a "hobby", (Still into HAM Radio; KF6EZW) but decided that I didnt want to work in that career field for the rest of my life. After getting my Private Pilot's License, I considered flying for a living......but,...... When I returned home from Air Force Tech School, I began spending a large amount of time at the gym, eventually getting into heavy lifting. I started spotting for a cop, and he convinced me to take some college Law Enforcement courses to see if it felt like a good fit. . In December of 1975, I began my 31 year career with the Orange County Sheriff's Department, retiring in 2007. It turned out to be a GREAT fit. Although I never would have considered a career in law enforcement while in high school, I cannot imagine a career where I would have had as much fun, learned as much about people, and felt the sense of accomplishment that I have - not to mention retirement at age 53. In all...Expand for more
seriousness though, law enforcement is a young man's career. I also retired from the Air National Guard after 22 years, retiring only to attend to family medical issues. During all of this, I was married for 23 years, have two beautiful "children" (I guess you can still call them children when they are in their 30s?) and three grandchildren. I went through a divorce in 2000, and although I have not remarried, have been with a caring woman for the past 21 years. I spend as much time as possible at my cabin in the Southern Utah mountains (Summer only), upgrading it , taking overnight ATV rides with friends, and attempting to build rustic cabin furniture. The location is Duck Creek Village, and is as quaint as the name sounds. I love visitors, so if you're in the area, be sure to let me know! (Cabin phone: 435-682-4123) During the winter, you will find me either at at my house in the high desert (Johnson Valley, Ca) - or at our "real home" in Hurricane, Utah 84737. I love home renovation, but as I age, I am entering into less and less involved projects! Retirement is great, for the most part doing what I want, when I want. After being tied down with work for so many years- the freedom is very refreshing. The sacrifices were worth it.
