Kirk's Story

As Robert Hunter of the Grateful Dead wrote on Truckin....Lately it occurs to me: What a long, strange trip it's been. By luck I found my way up to the Traverse City area and got into honeybees shortly after I got married to Sharon who today has a store next to our house called Beedazzled. Man...that was about 35 years ago. I'm still into beekeeping at Sleeping Bear Farms (we own and operate about 7000 hives and distribute honey and pollinate crops as far as California almonds). I got into Louisiana music and have a performing dance band (6 piece including scrub board) doing cajun and zydeco. We're K.Jones and the Benzie Playboys. I play button cajun accordion and fiddle. I mostly sing in creole French. We gig around Michigan for the most part at festivals and various events. Just for grins I clicked on classmates.com and got a few emails. Cool. Maybe I can find some friends I used to hang with. I was pretty overwhe...Expand for more
lmed in high school with so many students in our class. Wow. Those days are pretty fuzzy now. Anybody remember Woody? He lived on Norborne not far from RU. These days I hang around Benzonia by Crystal Lake in northwest Michigan and go to the panhandle of Florida with the bees in the winter a bit north of Panama City in the sticks. We make queens bees down there and some Tupelo honey(remember the Van Morrison song "Tupelo Honey" ?? *update 5/2015 I started getting into making mead (honey wine) and got a license to start a winery. We named it St. Ambrose Cellars. Now we have a pretty cool tasting room and great reds, whites, and meads in Beulah, MI. We should have draft mead and cider in bottles soon (2015). My buddy Doug Coster (Redford Union HS 1972) is our sales Mgr. Go figure. Still have a beekeeping operation going between Michigan and Florida and the winery going. I'm glad to be part of the Michigan scene!!

Becky Brown-Streby sent a stellar piece of her original art to commemorate and bless or new winery/meadery at St. Ambrose Cellars. Thank for Rebecca for your beautiful gift. We go back over 40 years!
