Kirk Armstrong:

CLASS OF 1963
Jacksonville, FL

Kirk's Story

Upon completion of high school, I enrolled in FSU and graduated in 1969 with a degree in Criminology. During this time, I was a member of Army ROTC and joined the swimming team as a follow up to my two years on the Terry Parker swim team. After two years of striving to reach the caliber of the swimmers on scholarship, I gave it up and used that extra time to devote to my studies. When graduation came, I had no immediate plans except to serve my country as a commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the Military Police. As fate would have it, I did not pass the physical, and thus, I moved back home to figure out my immediate future. Fortunately, after a few months I secured a job with the state welfare dept. as a social worker. I went on from there to work in the Child Welfare Dept,, the Division of Youth Services, and finally the Duval County Juvenile Court, where I was a court counselor for wayward juveniles. This was a job I truly loved, but circumstances prevented me from continuing to work in this area. My next big job was as a driver/salesman for Neal Tyler & Sons, a beer distributor of Old Milwaukee and Schlitz. I finally tired of this and began working for Jax Liquors as a manager trainee. Because I didn't like the hours or the working indoors, I continued to look for work elsewhere. A friend of mine, alerted me to a possible job in a chemical plant, called Glidden, and gave me a supervisor's name to contact.. For the next 37 years, I worked mostly as a chemical oper...Expand for more
ator, a position I retired from in October of 2012. I currently live on Lake Lucina and in my fourth year of serving as president of the Lucina Lake Associiation. This last year we introduced more bream, catfish and bass to the lake to give the fisherman a better experience. Next week, we will spray for southern nadia grass, which has prevented fishing along the shoreline because the grasses catch the lines when reeling in. This treatment will be supplemented with the addition of triploid carp in a couple of months. These fish are eating machines and live anywhere from 10 to 20 years. Once a month, I attend CPAC meetings at Craig Airport. This group is appointed by the mayor for one year. It is comprised of HOA representatives who advise the mayor on certain issues within our community, such as zoning change requests. We also ask a lot of questions of the city department heads who frequent the meetings. For those who don't know, Arlington is part of a 20-year revitalization plan, led by councilwoman Joyce Morgan. You might remember her as a news journalist on TV. This movement is spurred on by Jacksonville University which has not been happy with the deteriorating condition of the Arlington area. The future looks bright for our old stomping grounds, but it will be slow. I hope I live to see it. I am presently single, having barely survived two marriages with the same woman. I, therefore, don't recommend anyone thinking love is better the second time around.
