Kirsten's Story
Life
Hi :-). I was your exchange student 66/67. First semester at Lakeview High, Battle Creek. Second at Waterford Kettering High, Drayton Plains. Being an exchange student has a huge impact on a young person and I believe that many of my experiences and decisions later in life can truly be related back to same.
Ive had a good life with many of my dreams and expectations come true. I married in 78 my dear hubby Steen, chief surgeon at one of our major hospitals and with whom Im still enjoying life. We have a wonderful son, Jan, who will turn 27 this autumn and terminated his education as a civil pilot January 2008. He has now moved to Berlin, Germany to fly for "Germania". We live in a modern home in a beautiful green suburb some 15 km north of Copenhagen. A pleasant area with lots of lakes and forests, an easy subway ride to down-town and just 7 km from a lovely yacht harbor.
My career reflects my background as an exchange student as Ive now spend more than 40 years within the travel industry producing package tours to all parts of the world. For 8 years as the sales director sending my fellow countrymen on safaris in South Africa. Terminated this position in 2007 as 60-80 hours working weeks and increasing responsibility put me down with stress and a burnt-out-feeling. Been back in business since May 2008 working as sales supervisor for gap year programmes based on adventure, travel and volunteer work. I started working as a trainee at a travel agency right after my return from the US back in 1967. During the years Ive taken a number of educations though - among others as a correspondent in the English and German languages, a business bachelor within marketing and the int. IATA/UFTAA Travel Mgr. Diploma.
My job has made me able to combine hobby with work. Hence Ive had the opportunity to travel more or less all over the world and experience wonderful nature sceneries, interesting peoples and cultures. Ive been back to the US numerous times and no doubt, t...Expand for more
he US is still among my favorites. Im very attracted to the grand national parks in Utah/Arizona, enjoy the Rockies, love the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple while California caters for my dreams of sun, palms, ocean and dreamy houses in the Hills
As a true Scandinavian I just love the tropics, so many holidays are spent on palmy islands though...
As you may recall, my big passion was music back in the 60th. Well, I never did become the big famous rock mamma, but for a number of years I continued playing my electric guitar. My guitar is still my best friend and I do enjoy singing in chorus from time to time but it appeared that it wouldnt be within these areas that I should benefit the most but rather within dancing! I took up ballroom which lead to 15 years on the dance floor as an active competition dancer. A hobby only although I did have the great pleasure of representing my country at a number of int. championships. My partner became my husband, so we share many great moments. Stopped actively in 1981 but did continue as officials within the Dance Ass.
As said being an exchange student has a huge impact. Hence for many years I truly believed in the good of such programs and I worked on a voluntarily basis for long for YFU. Later I took it up professionally and worked some 5 years for the int. org. People to People producing group tours to the US and Japan on a home-stay basis while arranging for numerous int. visitors to come stay with Danish families. One of my best and most memorable jobs ever.
Some friendships are closer than others among those the one with my second host family. Mr. and Mrs. Esther and Ollie Johnson, in Drayton Plains. They gave me the warmest and most wonderful welcome into their family. Made me a true daughter of theirs. That friendship is eternally and they are still my mom and dad, whom Ive had the pleasure of revisiting with numerous times. They are the best that arose from being an exchange student back then!
