Kirsten's Story

Life After high school I lived on the east coast for five years, just working and going to school. Then I transferred back here to UCD and graduated on Mother's Day 1995 (ironically with my mom, who had dropped out when I was born and decided to finish her degree in international relations.) My own degree is in English (creative writing) but I didn't become a writer. Now I'm just a stay home mom taking care of my two kids here in Thornton. (Son was born in 2000, daughter in 2003.) Husband is a graphic designer (print and web). Now that I'm older I enjoy things I never thought twice about when I was younger, such as cooking and working out. I think that once my daughter is in school all day I will probably go back to school, either culinary school or more likely get a degree in nutrition. I had a health scare four years ago (they took out half my thyroid and found papillary cancer) that made me take stock of my life and I drastically changed my eating habits and ever since then I'm all about health and nutrition. One of my favorite things to do these days is fasting. Four times a year I do the Master Cleanse program for 10-20 days at a time and every time I do it I feel stronger and more powerful than I ever have before. I think I'm finally at a place ...Expand for more
in my life where I'm happy and satisfied with who I've become. What I remember from my high school days is being miserable constantly. I was never happy and always looking forward to it being over so I could "get on with my life." I wish that I had just tried to enjoy being in the moment more instead of wanting the time to pass quickly by. I remember also being annoyed by the fact that we lived so far away from everything. I couldn't imagine why my mom and stepdad were happy to live that far outside of town. If I had to cut all my own firewood, plow my own road, build my own bridge over the river, and not get any t.v. or radio reception, I'd have been suicidal. Or at least an alcoholic. Or both. I feel like such a city girl now compared to back then. What would I do without my daily dose of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert? Not to mention South Park. When I think of high school now, I try to remember my friends and the good times we had and the boys I had crushes on, and the teachers who made a difference (Mr. Powell, Mr. Wolf, Mr. Carmody, Mr. Loftsgard) and I have a lot to be happy about. The experience of living in Grand Lake has made it easier in a lot of ways and made me a more tolerant and patient person and for that I will always be grateful.
