Kit's Story
My life in a nutshell...there were only a few of us in my age group who got married right out of high school, or as in my case, right before I graduated. As a matter of fact, I recall attending the Jr/Sr prom in my wedding dress! How very "Parma"!
My California-born husband, Brian, and I had our first child, Christopher, about a month before I turned 19. Our daughter, Melissa, was born 21 months later.
The four of us moved to Hawai`i in 1981, so the kids actually grew up here. They're very "local".
We worked in flooring (carpet, tile, vinyl, wood) until we bought into a cabinet shop. From there we moved into cabinet making, then fine furniture. Brian perfected the craft and became a master woodworker of some reknown with clients as far-flung as New York, Florida, and Guam (everywhere is so far from here..
I worked in the shop with him and in an interior design shop, but in 1991 I got involved in an adult literacy project at our main library. I am now the Executive Director of that project (which sounds a lot grander than it is :) especially since the program has essentially been closed since Dece08.
Brian was diagnosed with colo-rectal cancer in Mar08, underwent radiation and chemo therapies and then had surgery in Dec08 (when I closed the program so I could accompany him to Honolulu for his surgery and then stay home to help him.) He had another surgery in F...Expand for more
eb09. Unfortunately, neither the radiation & chemo nor the surgeries helped save his life. Brian died July 22, 2009.
Learning to have a life after being married to my best friend for almost 35 years has been a real challenge. I find I don't know things because those memories were housed in his brain! All I had to do was say.."Honey, what was...?" and he'd fill in the blank. I find myself wondering who I am, as a "me", since I've been an "us" for all of my life..first with my parents and brothers, then with Brian and our children and grandchildren.
But I'm learning. I write a lot. I'm back to drawing a lot..well, not a lot, not even as much as I would like, but hey, posting info on classmates.com is so important, right? I always have a million projects to work on. I have been doing yoga for several years (still a beginner) and just started kickboxing last year (very beginner!) I know I love my kids & grandkids, extended family & friends, art, music, laughing, cooking/eating, physical labor, interacting with people, helping others, and learning new things.
Consequently, I've been sitting at the computer for most of the day learning facebook and classmates..getting people to interact with me :) eating a variety of leftovers, while visiting the People of WalMart site for laughs, and listening to music. It will be interesting to see what God intends for my life from here...
