Kathy Fraser:

CLASS OF 1971
Concord, CA
Ashland, OR

Kathy's Story

Wow! It's been 48 years since the class of 1971 graduated from CVHS! Often I think about our class and wonder where everyone is at now in their life. I left Concord to further my education after high school. Attended what was then San Fernando Valley State College for a year and a half then transferred to Southern Oregon College (SOC) in the spring of '73, after my parents retired in Ashland. Best choice I made as I became a person again, not just a number (small vs. large school). Graduated with a BA in General Studies/Humanities and a teaching license but opted to try some other fields of work first and ended up back in CA. Worked with a retail chain for a while in their management training program in Santa Clara and Oxnard. I then kept busy for two years as a substitute teacher in Port Hueneme, Oxnard, and Ventura before moving to Huntington Beach. (Back then when you substituted you could end up in any subject at any grade level so I had some pretty interesting experiences.) Landed a job as manager of an import store at Fashion Island, Newport Beach. Then I worked for a life insurance company at their corporate headquarters at Fashion Island. Finally, I decided teaching reading was what I really wanted to do so I decided to move back to Ashland and return to school. I attended classes in the evening and taught at a girl's group home during the day. Received my MA in Secondary Education and Standard License as a Reading Specialist in '81 and was hired to set up the alternative school program in Scappoose, OR. For personal reasons I opted not to return the following year. The hardest thing was leaving the students who really needed the help and the wonderful a...Expand for more
ide assigned to work with me and the kids. Back home for a year - worked seasonally at Harry and David - then applied for a teaching position when job openings became available in the spring. Offered several teaching positions. Accepted the position to teach seventh and eighth grade reading in Prineville (Central Oregon) as my sister lived in Bend. Spent the next 21 years there where I taught about nine different subject areas over the years. I was very involved in the teacher's union during my teaching career holding a variety of local offices and serving on the state Board of Directors, as well as committee appointments. During this time I got married and divorced, which I notice seems to be common nowadays. No children - I always said I had plenty to worry about with the 150+ kids I had five days a week and my ex already had two from his previous marriage. I moved back to Ashland June 15, 2005, to help out my mother, although she spent the first year taking care of me as I recovered from a bad car accident the day I was moving down in which I fractured my adontoid and came within 1/4 inch of totally severing my neck. All I know is that my guardian angel and God were with me that day and I truly believe that I was meant to be there for my mother. I had nine wonderful years with my mother who passed away in 2004 at 92. Since 2006, I've been a volunteer at Asante Ashland Community Hospital in a variety of capacities but the past four years I've been based in the gift shop three days a week. I'm also now in my fifth year volunteering one night a week serving dinner to anyone needing a hot meal. I thoroughly enjoy my volunteer work and find it a great way to give back.
