Konrad's Story
Life
I am still working in the fire service. I have 26 Years in and hopefully 2 or 3 to go. Right now i am a LT./EMT. Its been a great job over the years, getting to see my share of launches and working with the Astronaunts has been a great experience. Ive also got to travel overseas quite a bit, going to the abort sites for the shuttle. I am part of an Astronaunt rescue team. Mainly i go to the west coast of africa, Morrocco and Gambia. I have also been to Spain,England,Germany,Paris,Belguim, and Switzerland. I also have my degrees AA,BA,MA, with a minor in Science.I went to Potomac State college in West Virginia, Florida State and i finished at University Of Central Florida. Played football at PSC, and FSU. I also was in the Marines and Army and between the two had eight years. I still play quite a bit of racquetball and usally finish in the top three in the state in the FireFighters State Games. I love the beach, taking in a good movie, going out to a nice dinner, or being with that someone special, it dosent take much to make me happy. I am easy going, blue jeans and t-shirt type of guy. I love traveling are taking vacations to places i have never been. My two favorite so far are Costa Rica, and Panama. Also the Smokey Mountains, staying in a cabin. Love the outdoors and nature. I am a big animal lover, if i didnt work 24 hour shifts i would have a dog or two right now.
Workplace
As far as work goes it took me a few years to find my career. After graduation i worked all summer for Frank Kennedy Construction Company, Cocoa Beach. Worked some jobs at Kennedy Space Center, and Cape Canaveral Air Station, also at the port. In august i went to Keyser, West Virginia, Potomac State College, Home of the Catamounts, to report for two a days practice for football. Stayed a year, played football on a Scholarship. Came back home in went into the Marines. Two years later back home and back to college. Brevared Community College. Went out for Baseball, but ended up wrestling on a scholarship. After B.C.C. Went to Florida State University, walk on up there for foot...Expand for more
ball. Stayed a year and back to brevard county and finished college at University of Central Florida. Thought i would teach and Coach, i did for five years, but decided to go to the Fire Academy and have been with the fire service 26 years. My first 8 years were with Titusville Fire Rescue. Made LT. in three years and then i was up for battlion chief after six years. But after eight years i decided to make the move to Kennedy Space Center Fire Rescue. 18 years and i am a LT/EMT again. I miss coaching, but the fire service worked out so well i had to stay with it. When i retire from the fire service i would like to go back and coach some. Small College or High School.
Military
As far as the military, I joined the marines in November 1972, went to boot camp parris island south Carolina. Finished boot camp and got 10 days leave. Veitnam was still going and we would not be completely out untill 1975. When i join though they were started to down size in Veitnam i was in during this time but never got orders for Veitnam. My originally orders were for Washington D.C. 8 and I. I went back to parris island for school. After school I ended up being station at Marine Corps Air Station New River. Jacksonville North Carolina, Mag-29, Hams-29, Aerial Observation School. Than from there I work Mag-29 Headquarters, I handled all the files and directives for Mag-29. Than to Mag-26 Hams-26 travel and disbursements. Being Station on an air wing is pretty good duty. We had all helicopters, the 53s, Cobras, and the Hueys, except one fix wing aircraft the OV-10 an observation plane. That was assigned to VMO. During my time there I actually ran into one of my wrestling team mates from merritt island, Terry Cox who had a band at the time and was playing there. I use to drive to Greenville N.C. to East Carolina University to see Dave Lowe. Dave was playing football there and we played together at MIHS. The Marines was a good experience, and after my tour i was ready for college again. So i came back to Merritt Island and started at Brevard Community College.Cocoa, fla.
