Charles's Story

Life Just like a few of us did, I hung around Quitman for a few years. In May of 1989, I moved to Sulphur Springs where I worked as a form carpenter on the Cooper Lake Project for a year and a half. I then went into the dairy business with a friend near the Oklahoma line just long enough to realize that it wasn't for me. I moved to Louisiana for a year where I worked as a form carpenter and carpenter superintendent building a water treatment plant, a bridge, and several box culvert upgrades along I-20 near Monroe. While attending a bbq and beer bust in my hometown of Minden, La., I broke my foot in a drunken game of volleyball. I hung out at David Bailey's to recupperate, and decided to move back and begin anew in a cabinet shop in Alba. A couple of years later I took a job as a bouncer and DJ at East Fork, where on the same night of our ten year reunion I met the love of my life. Had I attended our class reunion, Becky and I would have never met. We were married four months later, and have been married ever since. We have two beautiful children-a daughter, Lila, who just turned 4 in April, and a son, Kordell, who will be 3 in November. This September will mark our 8th anniversary. The shop in Alba I worked for had relocated to Emory in 1992, and I took over as plant manager in 1998, having left the nightclub far behind. After three years as plant manager, increasing production by nearly 50%, I found I could not excel any further in the family owned company I worked for. Ending a 9 1/2 year run, I now work in Sulphur Springs for Hopco, where I run the specialty millwork division, in charge of the historical restoration of the Hopkins County Cou...Expand for more
rthouse, and several high end residential projects, designing and building one-of-a-kind furniture pieces and architectural works of art. Of all my accomplishments though, I am most proud of my family. ***May 22, 2004*** Have been in business for myself since August of 2003, building cabinets in a shop I have at home. My daughter is 6, and my son is 4. It is nice to be at home with my kids for a change ***October 9, 2008*** Time to update... My wife Becky and I have now been married 14 years, and still going strong. My daughter who is now in the 5th grade is already talking about going to UT Austin when she graduates- SLOW DOWN!!! My son, who is in the third grade has other longhorns on his mind-persuing a career in rodeo or as a cattle manager, just like his Grandpa. Looks like I'll be working in my cabinet shop by myself for a while longer. My wife has an established business now with her salon. We try to stay active in our church, Lake Fork Baptist, and both of volunteer in both scouting organizations here in Emory. As we become more involved in our community, we find ourselves occupied more times than not at commisioner's court, school board, or other organizations which need input from the citizens. As I have gotten older, I realize that just as our parents took care of those things for us, it is our responsibility to our children to do the same. On a lighter note, I find life coming full circle as I look back at the influence that Coach Seago had on me growing up and on into adulthood, that my children have the opportunity to glean from him the same educatioon, as he has been and is our superintendent of schools here.
