Kurt's Story

Life I was born in Liberal, KS, and lived ther until I was in the sixth grade (1967). I still have many relatives there and am curious about my old Liberal classmates who would have graduated in 1973. After a short stint in Perryton, TX, my family moved to Spearman, TX, a town where I made made good friends. After graduating from Spearman High School in 1973, I went to McMurry College in Abilene, Texas where I received by BBA in Marketing in 1978. I returned to Spearman where I worked with my family in the car business for several years. Later I moved to the Dallas area where I completed my Masters in Professional Accounting in 1990. Shortly after receiving my MPA (and getting married), I began working for Budget Rent a Car in Dallas. Business changes moved me to Denver, Connecticut, and finally Indianapolis. The Budget job ended in 1999 as did the marriage, unfortunately. (We're still friends, however.) For a while I worked as Director of Finance for MARC Promotions which is one of the largest promotional product sales and distibution firms. Then I worked for Guidant Corp., which made Defibrillators and pacemakers. I worked through their merger with another company. If things don't work out in my current job search, maybe I'll get back to Texas! I regret losing contact with good friends from High School. I'd love to hear from any of you! School As a kid in Liberal, I loved the friends I had at Southlawn Elementary, attending there until the 6th grade (1967?) I wished I could have finished school in Liberal, but the family moved ...Expand for more
to improve ecomic conditions. (I would have been in the 1973 graduating class.) After the move, we ended up in Spearman, TX, where my Mom still lives. I went to The Junior High and High School there. I loved band and started out in college to be a band director, but I found I didn't have the "ear" for it, so I ended up in Business. My favorite teacher was Mr. Mitchell in English. He was also the sponsor of the yearbook. I was involved in the yearbook two years, one year as Editor. I loved the creativity. These were very good years! College There were several of us who went to McMurry in '73... Brent Wheeler (my first roommate), Steve Reed, Scott Beedy, Scott "Orville" Latham, and Randy Kirk. My favorite memory of that first semester is when several of us put a stocking over Randy Kirk's face, then went to a couple dorms scaring both guys and girls. In hindsight it could have turned out badly, as he startled one of the dorm mothers so much she tossed a bunch of file cards in the air and clasped her heart! I started off in Music Education to become a band director. I found out early that I didn't have the ear to discern particular notes from a chord of multiple instruments. So I switched to Business where I was more of a natural. I still stayed involved with my Fine Arts friends, and I enjoyed being involved in some plays and musicals behind the scenes. Years later after moving to Dallas, I obtained my Masters of Professional Accounting at UT Arlington. This was pure work -- none of the socialization like what went on at McMurry.
