LaDonna's Story

As with everyone else, so much has happened in my life since high school. I married in 1966 and had two wonderful sons with my first husband. We were married for 13 years. I married my soulmate, best friend, and true love, Bill Armstrong, in 1979. He had four daughters. His youngest was the same age as my oldest. And his oldest was just 12 years younger than me. So at 34, I became a grandmother. I have 5 grandchildren through my stepdaughters; and 3 grandchildren through my sons. BEING A GRANDPARENT IS WONDERFUL!!! My husband and I are in the publishing/printing business. Our 30 years of marriage have flown by. I am hoping that is because we have kept so busy. I certainly would like the time to slow down a bit. I don't want the next 30 to go by quite so fast. My biggest passion is my mission work. I have gone every summer for the last 15 years to Zambia and worked with a medical mission. I am actually the Administrative Coordinator (which just means that I handle the paperwork, deal with Immigration Officials, take care of the money and whatever). We take 250 people out in the bush to treat those who never get to see a doctor. I could go on and on about my experiences doing this...and I may put tidbits in here occasionally. I will share a story I wrote recently about "My Summer Vacation." It was supposed to have some humor to it so hope you will enjoy it. Would love to hear from everyone! -- LaDonna Every July for 15 years, I have gone to Africa on a medical mission. We go into the remote bush and treat people who never get to see a doctor. We work from sun-up to way beyond sundown and in 6 days of clinics, we treat over 16,000 people. My husband always refers to this as "my summer vacation." After working so hard, we do take the time to do fun things...like white-water rafting down the mighty Zambezi River...right below Victoria Falls...one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Now...rafting the Zambezi is a white water rafter's ultimate dream because most of the rapids are graded 4 and 5. You can't go down a 6 because it is too dangerous. In a weak moment...let's say a VERY weak moment, I agreed to raft the Zambezi. Mind you, I had NEVER rafted in my life and I agreed to do what many experts just dream about. We started at Rapid 3 better known as Morning Glory. Why? Because most rafts usually flip dumping everyone into the water - so it is a "wake up to the glory of morning." Thank goodness we had a great guide in our raft! We were the only raft that didn't flip! By this point I am questioning my intelligence, or lack thereof, to agree to this. That morning all the rapids were graded 4 and 5. We even made it through the White Bottom Rapid - so named by the native guides because it is a 15 foot drop and the force from going down and back up will sometimes pull swimming trunks down revealing the white bottoms. We came to a Grade 6 and had to get out and walk around it. We were waiting on some others so I took the opportunity to go over and lean against the gorge wall to rest and to try and figure out if I was having fun yet. In a few moments, a guide to my left was trying to get my attention and a guide to the right was doing the same. I then realized there was a crocodile sunning himself about 10 feet from me. Luckily, he wasn't hungry...or maybe he was just as tired as I was. That afternoon was much calmer with only Grade 3's and a few 4's. But by the time we got out of the raft, our legs were weak and felt like jello. Or maybe that was just ...Expand for more
mine. We then discovered we were going to have to climb out of the gorge. As we trudged up, I was falling further and further behind. It was almost straight up and I had NO idea how far we had to go. Our guide held back and climbed with me. I kept asking him if we were almost there. He would just smile. After a long while, he looked over at me and said, "We are now half way." I couldn't believe it! I was totally exhausted and my legs felt like they couldn't go another step. I actually told him, "If a lion comes along, just let him eat me." And I meant it. I eventually made it to the top where everyone applauded. I'm sure they were happy I had made it...now the bus could finally leave. I'm glad to have the bragging rights to say I did it; but...it's like my eating a fried Mopane worm...I've done it; but it won't happen again. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- September 26, 2023 I am guessing this is how I add to my story so here goes. A lot has happened since our 50th. This last year, we sold our house in Sun City Grand and moved to Independent Living in Litchfield Park...just another city in the Phoenix metroplex. I was very distraught about the move. What comes to mind is a nursing home. But it is TOTALLY NOT THAT!!! The people here are go-getters. We have retired doctors, nurses, PhD's (some with more than one PhD), former mayors, pilots, lots of educators. It is amazing!!! Somehow we slipped through a crack and got in here. :-) Oh yes, the past President of the Arizona AARP lives here too. I knew it was necessary for my husband because he really worries when I am in Zambia for a month with the medical mission. He doesn't worry about me...but what if he falls or needs help. He is 9 years older so it was a valid concern. This was my 27th year to go on the medical mission and I don't plan to stop just yet. Our restaurant is like going to a 5-Star restaurant. You have at least 12 entrees to choose from...filets and salmon are always on the menu, cooked to your specifications. My husband says he has NEVER gotten a bad steak. They are always tender. Okay...the reason why I mentioned the restaurant. Before I left for Zambia, I talked with couples and single ladies we know. I asked them to be sure Bill gets out and goes down to dinner. I also explained to the couples that I asked the single ladies to do the same so they wouldn't think anything was going on. ;-) They kept him busy the whole time. The mission trip went really well. The worst thing we saw this year was a man with leprosy. He had lost fingers and toes; but his right foot was pretty bad. It had to be amputated. When it heals, we will get him a prosthetic. We do a lot of that. When we are out in the bush, I do the referrals. If we can't help them there, the doctors send them to me and I give them a referral and the funds to get to the hospital or clinic that can help them. Oh, yes, I give them the money to get back home also. Usually I am doing this for two people because they cannot go alone. They would need someone to help them. That's the part of my job that I like the most...helping the people. Otherwise, I am the Administrative Coordinator. Hope to hear from some of you and what you are doing now. Still wish I could have been there to graduate with all of you. Moving for your senior year is the pits. Mom and Dad are both in heaven now; but I know they are really getting tired of me complaining about that. Sorry, Mom and Dad! ;-)
