Lance's Story

Thirty one years ago, I married a Welsh midwife who had been recruited to the Chicago Area. After a series of strange jobs (never a career) and odd entrepreneurial escapades, we finally cashed the Brit ticket and moved to Swansea, South Wales, in April, 2003. We stayed for 3 months with my wife's sister and brother-in-law, before moving in to a large Victorian House, to begin renovating it for use as a bed and breakfast. Three months after we moved out of my in-laws house they decided to end their horrible marriage of 40 odd years. Six months later, my brother-in-law stabbed my sister-in-law six times, with a steak knife and screwdriver. The nasty lady lived, got all the money; and he is in the big house with the soft rooms, probably forever. We worked to get the B&B up and running and got ourselves into a niche housing young homeless people. (Over here,at, or after, the age of 16, when your obligation to education is done, if your parents kick you out of the house, for not obeying their rules, the state will pay for you to stay in a B&B, and give you £40 a week to develop your drunkeness, drug use and sexual promiscuity.) We were even featured briefly on a BBC documentary on homeless young people in Wales. We have since branched out our business to include Asylum seekers, who are overall, much better (potential) citizens than the local young people. So far, I estimate that 5 of the young people that passed through our doors have passed on; 2 suicides, 2 ODs and one car accident. In the early years, it was like Dorothy in Oz, only instead of "Lions and Tigers and Bears!" It was "Junkies and sluts and Thugs, OH MY!" The number of girls who have become single mothers, after pausing at our establishment, is almost beyond counting. (And to dispel a racist myth; if you pay young, white girls to have babies, they will. Oh yes they will.) At a car boot sale, which is kind of cross between...Expand for more
garage sales and a flea market, we saw one of our alumni, and she showed us a picture of her baby. It was especially touching, for us, because we remembered when she lost her virginity, when she was staying with us. At the time: "He stole my virginity!!" "Well, he didn't exactly STEAL it, now did he?" With the revenues from the B&B, we bought an historic Post office building that had been converted into a Pub. With our only child, a daughter, as manager. What else do you do with an honors degree in Sociology from Monmouth College? The Pub is located in the small city of Llanelli (pronounced thla-nethly)which is kind of like Mayberry with a drinking problem. In fact, Llanelli was recently named the biggest drinking City in Wales and second overall in Great Britain. I don't want to brag, but did I pick the right place to buy a pub? The people here are really warm and friendly. Good looking women of any age smile at me on the street, simply because I am a man, and instead of ending a phone conversation with a Rough BAYE!!, a la Larry Lujack, they stretch out telephone call endings, with soft, sexy voices that seem to indicate that the conversation was foreplay and the farewell is a multiple orgasm. If I appear to be ranting, it is only to obscure the fact that I never really fit in, in Chicago. I bounced from one misadventure to another, did some really interesting stuff, but never made any real money or felt like I belonged. Curiously, the thing I miss most is the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, to which I was a subscriber for many years. I am addressing this website because I went to about 8 different schools and if I feel like I belong to any one, it would be AT. Besides the Trauma of High School which is said to be more the norm, for most, than High School Musical, I did grow and grow up with y'all, and have fond memories of the exciting time we maturated in. Kind wishes to all.
