Lanny's Story

Life Growing up, I never realized what a great environment I grew up in, free from abuse, drugs, and peer pressure to do stupid dangerous stuff. College at Purdue University taught me to come out of my shell and define myself, pursue what was important to me. Graduate school led me from Physics to Religion (study of), after which, I decided I did not want to pursue a career in academia. So I lived in L.A. for three years teaching HS and then rode a bicycle across the country, settling in Richmond, VA. It took me some years to find my feet, but with a steady job, a fine religious community (Unitarian Universalism), I finally found a woman with whom to share my life. It was a long wait, but well worth it. I'm trying to move into free lance writing and photography. After working at Capital One for eleven years doing various IT jobs, I've gone back to teaching. I've started my own business, A-Squared Tutoring, which is growing well. Still learning new things. My wife, Wendy, shares many of my passions and we've had six years of happy marriage. We have two cats and enjoy origami, dancing, bicyling, and reading Harry Potter. School School could be very enjoyable, but also very stressful. I enjoyed grade school but then Junior High was hard because I was a shy kid and there were lots of bullies and competition. As confidence grew with age, I enjoyed more. Playing in the orchestra made a great difference, giving me a group of friends who appreciated my talents and who were a lot of fun. Senior year chess club added new friends. Although very shy, I occasionally surprised myself, like when I managed a date for a hayride with one of the most attractive and intelligent girls in the school. e my nerdish appearance, and sorry I let myself be intimidated from dating more. College I don't remember much of my first year except studying and working in the dorm cafeteria. My first three years were really challenging, studying mostly physics and math and working. I tried to date but did not meet anyone special until after my junior year. My last three semesters were when I opened up, made many new friends, dated more, had some romantic disappointments and finally met someone who thought I was as special as I thought she was. But I did not have the sense to postpone graduate school for the sake of the relationship, so I left a good thing behind when I went to graduate school. It took me nine years to get my Phd. I studied physics first and then religion and social ethics. I taught freshman composition, fell in love several times, rode a bicycle all over LA, made some wonderful friendships with the zany gang at the USC Science Fiction Club, and learned a great deal about the world and life. Workplace If I knew what I know now when I was in school, I'd have planned to be a writer and a photographer. As it was I studied science and then religion, while taking photos whenever I could. I tried teaching, but it was too stressful and I did not care for the politics of academia. I worked at Capital One for eleven years, doing various computer related jobs until I was laid-off last year. I decided to get back to education and started a tutoring company called A-Squared Tutoring (2006). It is growing and I'm hoping I can do it full time by next fall. This spring (2007) I taught middle school math at St. Benedict School, replacing a teacher who left in the spring. I will not be resuming that job, but it was interesting and challenging.
