Lanny's Story
10/13/09
Gosh ,where did all the time go, I can't believe its been almost 50 years. I really enjoyed my HS years, Cruising,Football, and. Dances at Harrison Park, DUKES, Pine View, Cascade Plunge, Holiday Beach, and maybe best of all...the Hang Out in Panama City ...the 2nd week in Aug...and the drive in's, Fair Park, Shades Mt. and especially the # 1 on Bessemer highway, and How about Constantines, The Frosty Top...All those GREAT west side INSTITUTIONS..
We really had it made..virtually no drugs ,Most all of us were really good kids ,but plenty of BEER, I always felt so close to all the west side schools, WEHS, and Ensley, and Jones Valley. So many friends..so many memories , 99%Positive and maybe 1% negative...but I can't remember what that 1% was.
After HS , I went in AF reserve to avoid the draft,,It worked. Went to Univ. of Al for a while. didn't graduate, I did get a AA going to night school at Jeff St.
In Oct. 1963, Susie Douglas ( WEHS class of 63) and I Married..We have 2 children and 2 grand children....Expand for more
My career was in insurance management. From B'ham to Montgomery for 7 years...to Salina Ks. for 3 years and then, Wichita ,Ks. for 23 years. From Al. to Kansas...Quite an adjustment..the weather, the people,my acceptance...I did have a southern accent which sounded quite strange out there on the High Plains of Kansas...All this adversity was a God send,It really worked in our favor. We made a good life, Made many life time friends . the biggest problem we faced was ,We lived 855 miles from Destin, but, we managed at least one, but some years 2 or even three visits to the prettiest place in America...DESTIN, FL.
In 2002, we retired and moved to Dallas..oh well, not Dallas but, Corinth, Tx. about 25 mi . N. of Dallas on Lake Lewisville.Why?..My grand kids live here. It's not Destin, But it is GREEN water..We don"t have a beach..so we have a little SEA RAY..and we still go to Destin, can you tell, I kinda like Destin?
In 3 mos. I'll be 68...But I feel about 40 or so..I really think that I may make 100 or even 110.
