Larry's Story
I’ve always said I’m going to go to the 50th in Gahanna and can’t wait. AND, on the same road trip to attend MOPAR National at National Trail Raceway. What an incredible place that was.
Five and a half years of retired. It is still fantastic. I am not a person who needs to work, thank you very much. Still a avid book reader. Laugh at this all you want but one of my current projects has been setting up a Windows 98 computer with a Pentium 4 and an SSD. It is very fast. All so I can run old Flight Simulators (95-98-etc.) on it. Spent nearly a week getting an old joystick to work on it.
Speaking of flying, I can hardly remember doing it (and not in a senility way!) I think of all the times I heard “All you do is push buttons.” Or “Do you hope to one day fly commercially? (Most of my career was flying cargo rather than passengers.) My Dad was a flight engineer and he used to say “I wish I made as much money as my kids think I do, had as much time off as my neighbors think I do and had as many girlfriends as my wife thinks I do.” Fantastic career and so grateful I got to do it, particularly when it was still fun.
Wish I could be at Interlake’s reunion but I wasn't even there the complete year of 9th grade (‘67’68?) Did I read somewhere they’re contemplating razing it? Wow, that’s how I know it’s been a half decade!

I wish I remembered so many more of the people I knew from my short stay in Bellevue at Highland Jr. High and Interlake High (Jan.'67-apr.'68). That was when Bellevue was just a really nice little city! What I remember most strongly is how incredibly nice everyone was to me. Oklahoma City Air Force Base to Bellevue was quite a change! And the Pacific Northwest was almost as leading edge counter-culture as northern CA! I remember news coverage in OK. City of crowds burning Beatles records after one of them said "We're more popular than Jesus Christ."
I have my class 8-8 (Mr. Rayner's homeroom) yearbook with a myriads of inscriptions from classmates. It is a treasured possession because of the multitude of gracious things people I barely knew wrote of me. To all of you, thank you so much for that!
Some have incorrectly inferred I did not like my job and aviation. Quite the contrary. I every day give thanx that I got to do it at the level I retired from. But anyone who has been in aviation for a long time knows well how it has changed since the '70s, '80s and on. And not for the better. Those who were there, remember crew parties and laughing and teasing each other? in a very loving fun way? I used to say I would work at my job when I was flying pax out of JFK in the early '80s for free. Going to work was a vacation.
OK, I'm crossing ovor into Unintentionally Deep territory so I'd better quit!

PS I had made major plans to be at my Gahanna Lincoln (Columus,OH) 50th reunion next year. That's probably not going to happen. After an untoward incident (I was a VICTIM!) involving a liquored up participant (unnamed! I'll probably pass so as to avoid getting b-slapped by her again. And remember, I WAS A VICTIM!!! Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln...?
Hey, that's pretty funny! Classmates wont' let me type "B-SLAPPED"! Let me get my thesaurus.
SO enjoyed seeing so many old friends Fri (07/15/16) at Gatsby's. Everyone looked great! I'll put the 50th on my calendar now as there's no way I'd miss it!
Louisville will always be home as all four kids and the grandkids live here.
Officially retired from aviation after 30 years at UPS, the last 23 as a 757/767 Captain. I still get asked a lot if I miss flying but the truth is not even a little bit. It is so remarkable to not have to be anywhere or do anything at any time! Highly recommend it!
Biggest amount of time is us watching our almost 3 year old grandson as his mom and dad work. Absolutely greatest joy in life!
Really excited to be in Gahanna on Fri&Sat with my two best friends from Lincoln, Bert DuVernay and Pete Biscus. See you all there!
Flew my last flight in Feb. and I don't care how much one enjoys their job: NOT working is WAY better! People keep asking if I miss flying and it is surprising even to me but, not one iota. It feels like I've empt...Expand for more
ied 80% of my brain in a good way. I used to tell my kids " Flying's not hard. You just have to remember everything."
Thanx to all who were such delights to speak with, albeit briefly.

Really looking forward to seeing fellow Gahannaittes (?) in July! It's so enjoyable to meet, for the first time often, all those who share similar memories from those great days at Lincoln and in Gahanna/Columus.
Speaking of Columbus, I HIGHLY recommend "Last Edition" by Bob Greene; NOT the Bob Greene who's one of Oprah's minions but the former Chicago newspapers' columnist. He started out writing for the Citizen-Journal (can you even imagine when a city had TWO great newspapers?) while attending Bexley High School in the late '60s. "Last Edition" relives the best times of working there through the shutdown of the paper. His recollections of downtown Columbus when Broad and High was the center of the universe are incredibly evocative of great memories of those days. I've been fortunate to share an e-mail correspondence with him as my father-in-law was a pressman at the CJ for thirty years.
I'm pretty certain my sked will permit me to attend in July because I've mostly retired from flying. 45 years, 24,000 hours and almost 200 ocean crossings is enough to say "I'm done, thank you very much." I don't care how much you enjoy what you do, you can't beat staying home! Many people have said I'll be bored after six months but I just don't see that happening. I enjoy my reading and other avocations far too much.
While flying a trip to Columbus at UPS, I had a jumpseater (fellow pilot just catching a ride somewhere) riding with me. As we talked, we discovered we were both from Lincoln Class of '71 and he'd been a fellow Captain on the 757/767 at UPS since the '90s!! I embarrassed to say I've forgotten his name but to run into someone from Lincoln and the same class who ended up at a major league airline like UPS and we didn't even know each other is pretty weird! He even knew my best friend Bert DuVernay.
As we were told many times when we first moved to Columbus in September '68, "If you can say BANANA, you can say GAHANNA!
See you all in July.
Larry

Still flying (757/767 Captain) for UPS. MIGHT retire next year but I still so love flying
. We love Louisville and just celebrated our 30th anniversary. I'm so fortunate in that all four of our kids and all four of our grandkids are nearby and it is SO much fun. The three month old spent the day with us yesterday.
-------------------
Graduated in 05/71. Went right into the Air Force for five years. Got married. It lasted four years. No children.
Stayed in aviation since forever. I've flown for UPS for 19 years, the last 12 as a 757/767 Captain.
Lived a lot of places (New York, Jamaica, Germany, England, etc.) Always kept my house in Gahanna (where my Mom and Dad still live after 38 years since moving to Columbus in '68.)
Met my wife, Brenda, in Columbus on a blind date in '85. Engaged a month later and now it's 22 years later! Our two oldest (from her first) are 33 and 29. Our two youngest are 21 and 18. We have two grandkids from our oldest daughter. They're 4 and 2 and so much fun!
My youngest daughter (18) and I go to the Circleville Pumpkin Festival every year. Last year ('06) we went to the Lincoln Lions football game. It was really interesting to go back there after all these years. I was a photographer for the yearbook and "Lion's Roar" school paper and well remember being on the sidelines of all the games. That's such a fun memory.
Just found out about Classmates. com from my dentist and had to check it out right away!

School
I was a photographer for the yearbook and newspaper my three years at Lincoln, taking most of the photos for my junior & senior years. Photography is still a big hobby of mine.
OK. Just have to post this. Does anyone else remember Chuck Woods (Am. Govt/History) as being the laziest teacher ever? How many "fake days" a week did you have? But, he was the creator of the phrase "snowbiation" !
Military
I was in the Air Force from '71-76 starting as an aircraft mechanic and finishing as a C-141 flight engineer.
