Larry's Story

my 19th birthday jan 2nd 1976 i left for the us army. i spent 9 years total in the us army mostly working in communications and military intelligence. received numerous medals, ribons, etc. graduated distinguished honor graduate in 2 areas of study. succesfully completed basic training twice without failing the first time(very unusual and i had to do basic all over again because of a 5 year break in service).attended the defense language institute at the presidio of monterey in california. lived many places throughout the USA and international locations in europe and asia along with vacations to other locations. i turned down an assignment that would have placed me in the US embassy in iran when the hostage takeover happened.that was a close one!! in july 1976 i married pam walls(avondale class of 1976). no kids and no house and we were divorced in spring of 1980. i worked for IBM in chicago and detroit area as a customer engineer(computer sytems repair). i found out over time that i like working with people more than machines so in the early 90's i began a successfull career in financial services(mostly financial planning and insurance work)mostly with prudential. in 1991 in met my current wife jodi niemi(avondale class of 1985).we met in such a way it had nothing to do with the fact that we both graduated from avondale and both lived in bloomfield orchards subdivision. we now have 6 children. 5 girls 1 boy(good thing i liked girls so much).their ages in 2010 are 17,15,13,9,6,3. i did not have my first child until i was 35. i accumulated some college credit at oakland community college and university of maryland but most of my post high school education was vocational.between military electronics,IBM training, national institute of technology, financial services training(service and sales)and my state/federal insurance and investment regulatory training/testing i have completed enough education to equal a masters degree although i do not actually have even an associates degree. from 2002 on i have been self-employed employed and the owner of freedom investments and insurance agency,l...Expand for more
lc.unfortunatley since 2006 i have had a number of setbacks mostly health related that has negatively affected my businesss along with that business partner died suddenly in 2006 also.as of 2010 most of the health issues have been improved and my health is now "on the comeback trail". as for hobbies that changed alot when i started having health problems especially due to lower back problems. before that started in played alot of softball.i also bowled and played golf, too. i enjoyed watching sports on tv which i rarely do not do now due to the fact that we unplugged all broadcast and cable tv in the late 90's. so now i do not PLAY sports but i am very involved in fantasy baseball along with board games of historical military events and tabletop miniatures. i attend conventions occasionally and i have a network of local, national, and international people who participate with me in person or by email.some of these games/simulations cannot be purchased anywhere and have been developed by friends of mine with much military history experience and were developed just for our groups use. i read alot of books and do enjoy movies along with watching dvd's of the tv series Lost and 24. since the early 1990's i have led a life that most people will consider to be very conservative. that would apply to family values/religion/politics but let's not talk about the politics/religion as it can be decisive and my purpose of joining classmats/facebook is to RECONNECT NOT DISCONNECT. despite my conservatism i still like to have alot of fun, like people, want the best for them, and take them at their word mostly. i love games and activites. in alot ways my personality is still outgoing like it was in high school. it is just the behaviors are much more docile than it used to be. within my circle of influence among my conservative friends/church friends i would probably be considered by them to be on the liberal side of conservative. i currently live in grand blanc, michigan but would reaaly like to live in tennesee or virginia but my wife would never want us to move(i am a confederate sympathizer!!!).
