Larry's Story

Larry's schools include Bullitt Central High School. Larry works at Florida State Parks. Larry lives in the charming artistic community of Gulfport, Florida. He joined the United States Navy in 1978 where he successfully completed the prestigious U. S. Naval Schools of Photography and served as a combat camera team member. He also earned his Navy Aircrew wings and flew on board Navy maritime patrol, reconnaissance, surveillance aircraft the P-3 Orion. He is an award-winning Navy photographer and he is a decorated veteran. Having earned most notably the Navy Expeditionary Forces medal, Navy Unit Commendation and Meritorious Service Commendations among others. In between the United States Navy and the Florida Park service Larry volunteered and worked briefly at the then Clearwater Marine Science Center and Aquarium in Clearwater, Florida. Larry put his extensive Naval training and survival skills to work rescueing and rehabing stranded and injured marine mamals such as whales, dolphins and sea turtles. Back in the early 90's the Science Center and Aquarium was'nt much more than a converted old city sewage treatment facility that the then Founder and Executive Director Dennis Kellenberger purchased the former treatment facility from the City for a buck and began the monumental task of converting into a useable rehab for sick marine mamals. ty as well, Having been Navy trained he was very adept with a paint brush ;). Most people know the facility today as simply the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Where the movie Dolphin Tales was filmed about the true story of Winter the Dolphin having been rescued and having to ampute the tail and having a prosthetic tail attached. He is currently a Florida State Park Ranger with the Florida Park Service. He also serves as a trained wildland firefighter on the Florida Park Service's Wildfire Strike Teams, a first responder on the Florida Hurricane Disaster Response Teams, and he works with FEMA during both wildfire and hurricane relief efforts. Having served over twenty years, Larry will soon retire from the park service and plans to dedicate all his energy to his art and work within the artistic community in and around the Tampa Bay area. Larry’s art is currently shown in the Veterans Art Center Tampa Bay. Larry was one of only five veteran artists selected for display for a veteran art exhibit outside the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa as part of the National Initiative for Arts & Health in the Military. Larry's photographic fine art can be found also on display at the Enroy Foundation Gallery and for sale in the Beach Bazaar, both located in Gulfport. Larry also devotes much of his free time volunteering for the Veterans Art Center Tampa Bay organizing special events and fund raisers.
