Larry's Story

After Tech, went to Brooklyn College. Majored in history, minored in economics and got certified as a social studies teacher. Worked in A&S Department Store while in school as a stock boy and got involved with organizing a union for the workers. Went to work for the union as an organizer after college and that is what started me on my life career. While working for the union's health fund started part time to get a masters of public administration in health policy planning and administration. Left the union and went full time when NYU gave me a full tuition scholarship. Worked for NYU for two years getting the Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives off the ground. It's a special collection devoted to collecting NYC labor union records and making them available to scholars. Then went to Brooklyn Law School where I focused my studies on labor law. First job after law school was being an assistant professor for Hofstra University, teaching in and coordinating an undergraduate concentration in Trade Union Administration. First law job was being in-house counsel to a union in the laundry and linen supply industry and its pension and welfare funds. Left after 4 years to go to Vladeck, Waldman, Elias & Engelhard, a prominent firm on the union side that is better known for representing employees against their employer in discrimination actions. Made partner. Left after 17 years to found my own f...Expand for more
irm, Cary Kane LLP which does labor, employment and employee benefits law. We are located at Harald Square, NYC. We have been in business about 5 years. For two years I commuted to Washington DC one day a week to earn a certificate in employee benefits law from the graduate division of Georgetown Law School. On a personal note, I married for the first time while still in college. It did not last long. I married for the second time after finishing law school. This marriage has lasted - 24 years so far. We live in NJ and have two sons, the oldest is to leave for college in the Fall. I serve on a variety of boards. I'm on the board of the Brooklyn Tech Alumni Foundation, where I serve on the finance committee. The Foundation is raising $21 Million to support Tech, about 1/2 way there. I am treasurer to the Workers Defense League, which provides free representation to claimants in unemployment insurance compensation hearings. I have been on the board of the Wagner Labor Archives for over 20 years. In addition, for 25 years, I taught labor law and related subjects at the extension division of Cornell's School of Industrial and Labor Relations. It's almost 40 years since graduating Brooklyn Tech. Much of who I am and what I have been able to accomplish I owe to the education and experiences I had at that school. It would be great to see people at the reunion on April 23 and 24, 2010.
