Larry's Story

How did we get to Woodham..anyways...Our family lived in Pensacola from 1971 thru 1978, during which my Dad was City Manager, we previously lived in Central Virginia and Chicago. After 1978, Dads job took the family back to Virginia to the Greater Richmond area. After HS graduation, and two years at a military prep school, I was commissioned a 2LT, and finished my last two years of academics at Va Tech. Went to Bennings School for boys, jumped out of high velocity aircraft, and on my second jump I bumped into Alan Ganey on a Georgia Drop Zone (at the time he was Special Forces), have not seen him since. My first assignment was in Southern California's Mojave Desert, working for General Wesley Clark, then a Colonel. Our mission involved preparing US Forces in the art of desert warfare - we excelled at our job, that was 1983...Desert Storm followed. Got married in 1983, left active duty in 1985, went east, back to VAs Chesapeake Bay. Soon thereafter, was diagnosed with cancer, had many chemo cocktails, lost 30 lbs in two weeks, gained it back in about a year. In 1986, began a career in municipal government, did a lot of Bay and River fishing, in '96, Cora and I went to the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, looked up HS Buds-Greg and Sabrina Evans, at the time they were living just north of Hot'lanta...begged a place to stay.... Left VA in 1996 to N. Carolina's Crystal Coast. While there took fishing up several notches, been catching King, Mahi, Cobia, Cuda, Spots, but no Tuna or Marlin-yet. Visted another Olympics, this one...Expand for more
the Winter in Salt Lake, tried snow skiing... became an expert on the bunny slope, then got on the wrong lift, got off on a triple diamond slope, it was ugly, got lost, came in after dark... Found time to get a MBA at Campbell '01, and MSS from the US Army War College, '05... had absolutely no life during that academic period. Paradise on the crystal coast was interrupted by a call back to active duty to support the Global War on Terrorism (2003-04), but instead of going to the Middle East, I went to the mid west- Missouri, Fort Lost in the Woods, got AG qualified...got the Coin and T-shirt to... Found a part time USAR job in Joint Forces Command, Norfolk, VA; It was a great joint experience, participated in varied joint exercises with Northern Command, Pacific Command and Strategic Command. In 2008, navigated my reassignment to Ft Bragg and returned to airborne status. From 2008-10, was thrilled at participating in a number of foriegn exchange airborne operations, Australian, Chilean, Canadian, German - and retired from the USAR in 2010.. I have worked in five municipal governments, one in VA and four in NC. With Retirement less than a decade or so away, our employers defined benefit plan looks better each day. My wife is a special education teacher for the Department of Defense; she gets a lot of practice at home - very dedicated, and takes the responsibility of helping children ever so serious, if only the parents did to. I remain an avid fisherman, aspiring to be a coastal angler, but now, only on weekends...
