Larry's Story
Hello Cubberley Classmates. In the words of our rock prophet Jerry Garcia: “What a long strange trip it's been”.
Life is very good now. My wife Susan and I will be celebrating 50 years of marriage this Sept. I retired from NASA in 2008 and my wife retired from Keysight in 2018. We moved out of the Bay Area in 2014. Santa Rosa is our very desirable place to get old.
Though most of the eighties were a troubling time for us, my wife and I persevered and experienced a great deal of personal growth and also growth as a committed couple. This did not happen without help. Here is where I pay homage to the VA counselors, marriage counselors, employment counselors and financial counselors: Thanks for helping us fix what was broken.
Backing the timeline up even further will identify the year I dropped-out of San Jose State (1968)....Expand for more
Then after a period of uselessness I enlisted and subsequently did three combat tours in Vietnam as Huey Crew Chief/Door Gunner. What followed that was a seven year long hitch as an A&P Line Mechanic with Trans World Airlines. A furlough from that spurred me into six years in the construction trades, but that ended and bounced me into a small business venture as a Matco Tool Distributor.
I finally achieved some career stability (at age 42) when I hired into the US Government. Being an Engineering Technician at NASA-Ames was a very good thing for me and my family.
Oh Yeah - - family. We have three children (born ’77,
’80 and ’83) A son and then two daughters.
I have been a warrior, a merchant, a mechanic, a tradesman and a technician. Enough is Enough - - I am coasting into old age feeling very fulfilled and content.
