Larry's Story
Life
After graduating from Birmingham-Southern in 1969 I taught in the Jefferson County System for a few years but finally followed my calling and obtained my seminary degree from the Divinity School of Vanderbilt University. Having served several churches in the North Alabama Conference,I am in my sixteenth year as pastor of the Woodlawn United Methodist Church. Can you imagine a Phillips boy in Woodlawn? My parishoners include our former band director Harry Holtam and Barbara Hamill's parents. We are an inner city church committed to making life better for our community. We house the Cornerstone School, and Youth Works in our facility. We are by choice and by the guiding Spirit of God an inclusive community of faith where all of God's children are welcome.I was privileged to be the Birmingham East District nominee for the Denman Evangelism Award in 2004. o miss her very much. Lost Daddy way back in 1985, and I miss him greatly as well. In July of 2004 I had the sacred privilege of conducting the funeral for Tommy McClendon's father and later for his mother.I also have had the sacred responsibility of conducting funerals for Bob Atkin's parents and his uncle. It is amazing how we are all still connected. Would love to hear from classmates, friends, and former students. Hope life is good for all of you.
A little post script: On Pentecost Sunday of 2009, our historic Woodlawn sanctuary burned. We are holding our worship services in our fellowship hall and plan to begin, along with Cornerstone School, building a facility that will serve not only the church, but also the school and the greater community. As I was quoted in the "Birmingham News", "God's in the business of turning tragedy into triumph". We will make it and become even stronger and more faithful to our calling because of what has happened to us. I'm sure of it!
