Larry's Story
From our book, "What Works for GE May Not Work for You: Using Human Systems Dynamics to Build a Culture of Process Improvement" (Lawrence Solow and Brenda Fake, Productivity Press, 2010).
"Larry has always been a person to ask questions and challenge traditional theory. His M.O. for learning is to be introduced to a new subject, discuss it, and during the conversation identify assumptions, inconsistencies, and exceptions.
As a freshman at Rutgers University in 1974, Larry enrolled in a course named âÂÂIntroduction to Human Communicationâ taught by David (âÂÂLouieâÂÂ) Bender. BenderâÂÂs common sense, provocative approach to learning captivated Larry and he chose to major in Human Communications. Larry went on to get his Masters degree in Organizational Communication and eventually found a job with Robert Bell and Company, a short-interval scheduling consulting firm. Reflecting on that experience, Larry laughs as he recounted almost being fired several times because of his incessant questioning.
After a stint with another consulting firm, Larry joined Harley-Davidson, Inc. in York, PA as a senior OD consultant. Harley provided a powerful âÂÂlearning laboratoryâ for his continuing questions about the intersection of theory and practice. He was exposed to the concepts and t...Expand for more
ools of Total Quality Management during this time.
A consulting colleague, Lisa Marshall, knew of LarryâÂÂs questioning nature and suggested he contact Mark Michaels, chair of the Chaos Network. Mark suggested Larry read the same âÂÂMaking a New Scienceâ text that was so instrumental in GlendaâÂÂs thinking. That conversation led to an invitation to present at the first annual Chaos Network Conference in Washington, DC.
Larry moved to a division of AlliedSignal Aerospace as a Manager of Total Quality. Here he would continue to refine his thinking regarding the âÂÂmessyâ intersection of process improvement tools, change, and organizational culture.
Larry left AlliedSignal in 1993 to start his own consulting practice. He earned his Six Sigma Black Belt in 2004. Working as a subcontractor for various local county colleges, Larry helped implement Six Sigma processes in ten small to mid-sized companies over the next several years, with varying results. Never having lost his questioning nature, he asked, âÂÂIf the same instructor is teaching the same way, using the same materials, in the same sized companies, how come the results are so different?âÂÂ
His search for the answer led him back to chaos and complexity theory. He was certified as an HSD Professional in 2008."
